you guys should really read your contract. I know ours backwards and forwards. You DO NOT have to be sick to request a leave of absence. You can request a personal leave of absence for ANY reason for up to 60 days.
Article 15 subsection B.
That doesn't mean it's auto approved, your store manager has to agree to it but he is compelled to agree to it unless he has a very good reason not to. If he refuses your LOA and does not have a good reason you can file a grievance and let the union take over the matter.
Its your union, use it.
ARTICLE 15. LEAVE OF ABSENCE A. Request for leaves of absence must be made by the employee in writing to the Employer's Human Resource Office with a copy to the Union. Such requests must be made at least two (2) weeks prior to the desired date of leave, except in cases of sickness or injury or as otherwise specified below. B. Personal Leave: Employees may be granted a personal leave of absence not to exceed sixty (60) days. The Employer will not arbitrarily deny such request.
