What to do in this situation
Permalink

I'm a cashier and sometimes I may get a customer who have an empty bottle or some food product sitting in their buggy. I attempt to scan it thinking they ate while shopping(tons of ppl in my store tend to eat merchandise while shopping before paying) so I was assuming this was one of those times but the customer claims they brought the item in with them. Like this guy had an empty pepsi bottle and I was going to scan but he claims he bought it from the gas station before he came in. I'll just toss the trash in the can and don't worry about it but sometimes I feel bad because it feels like the customer is lying so they don't have0 to pay for what they already ate. I was wondering if there is a certain way to handle this or continue doing what I have been doing.

Also what am I suppose to do when I have a customer who allows their child to eat an apple that has to be weighed to ring up but the child ate the entire apple and left only the core.

Speak to your CSM and store manager about company policy on this issue.  Get a clear example of what you are supposed to do in these circumstances.  Most customers have better manners than what you just described.

For one thing, that is shoplifting to use a product before paying for it.  For another, that is tacky to do that.  I can understand walking in the store with a starbucks coffee but you never know about a 20 oz pop.  Here we pay 10 cents deposit on bottles.  I think if an honest person really bought the pepsi, they would want to take their 10 cent deposit with them.  A thief doesn't care about the 10 cents.

Store cameras would be the only witness that knows for certain.  Never accuse a customer of anything.  Let the Store managers deal with that. I think it is OK to make a customer uncompfortable in this instance but definitely check with your CSM.

On the apple,  weigh the kid and use that to price the apple.smile  (I would get the biggest apple you can find in produce and use that to price the apple that already got ate.)  Check with manager if you are allowed to ask a customer not to eat merchandise before purchasing.

Send them to Walmart where trailer trash shops.  I am trailer trash so I can say that...

Sounds like u r in a tough city store. What ur doing sounds good. Don't ever accuse them of lying or stealing and if a few things get by so what? Kroger isn't going to bankrupt just because a few sodas, apples, or cookies are consumed . It happens everyday in most stores and if they want it stopped then they need to amp up on security guards/ loss prevention personnel. You are not paid enough to start an argument over something little that's NOT YOUR MONEY. U could anger a nutcase that will be waiting for u later out in the parking lot.

it's called grazing and it happens even in my 'upscale' store.  usually they'll eat a lara bar or let their child have some weird organic drink.

I always ask "Do I need to scan this?"
