Kroger won't hire me
Permalink

I had an interview at my local Kroger for a part time job.  The manager told me that although I have the experience, they cannot hire me because I work for a competitor.  I would have to quit the other job if I want to work at Kroger.  I would be getting 20-25 hours per week.  I get about the same at the other job but make $2 per hour more.  Any advice ?

Yeah that's how it is everywhere, it's a conflict of interest to work for, say, Kroger and Safeway simultaneously, so both companies have policies against it and you would be fired from your other job if they found out you worked for Kroger.

If you're getting the same hours and a higher pay at the other store I'd just stick with them and find a non-grocery company for a second part time position.

Keep the job you have now.  You can't work for Kroger and another grocery store or Walmart.  Try to find a job at a mom and pop hardware store.  I am not sure if home depot or lowes woudl be ok.

Good luck.

I recently applied for a PT job at Ace hardware.  I have well over 20 years of retail experience including work for both Lowe's & Home Depot. I use to manage as well.  Now that I got a great PT gig as a traveling vendor, I thought I could fill out my work at Ace.  So the interview was going quite well.  it really cracks me up how serious they all get over some BS part time job.  Its as if you are on the Apprentice or something.  So the manager starts saying "well, we need a person who can work both weekend days pretty much".  I really was only willing to give them one - Sat or Sun.  So I go, "lets get down to the real question here.  What is the pay rate?"  He said to me with a straight face "$8.50 and hour"  I told him he might as well walk across the street to the local high school and find an inexperienced kid from there.  Needless to say I didn't take the job.  That's my hardware story to you all.

I would've called the grammar police on him, "$8.50 AND hour" and walked out then and there...

Yea, nobody wants to pay anything any more-----and finding a job with benefits is damned near impossible these days. It's all the main reason I've chosen to stay where I'm at, much as I increasingly hate it.

If you make more money at the other job I would suggest keeping it, depending on the amount of hours you make.

At Kroger, I am a courtesy clerk damned to part time employment. So therefore, whenever I get asked "Can you work Tuesday XXX to XXX" or "Can you stay until XXX" when I was supposed to be off at YYY I tell the supervisor or manager who asked "yes."

As a result, last week I was supposed to work around 20 hours. My final clock on on Friday, after working every day of the week, was 36.50 hours. That's nearly full time hours, but not enough for full time. However, it will make at least $100 difference on this upcoming paycheck.

So it's really up to you. You have to ask yourself some hard questions. Am I getting the hours I need at my current job? How much is the pay? Is it worth a pay cut just to go to work for Kroger? And what would you be doing at Kroger? As a courtesy clerk I am the lowest on the ladder. And I can assure you that it is NOT WORTH $7.25 an hour to bring in carts from the lot. Period. Even in good conditions, it sucks. The bagging, eh, it's okay, and I haven't been trained for Utility Clerk yet so I don't have to worry about spills or restrooms, just trying to find something to do to stay busy when we are slow and keeping an eye on the registers to "bounce" in when a cashier has no one or to find something to do in assisting one of my fellow courtesy clerks.

If you work anywhere else in the store OTHER THAN courtesy clerk (or possibly cashier) you may stand to be able to make the pay you have now. Maybe.

Been there about six weeks now and I do like my job but one supervisor tells me one thing and another supervisor tells me another. One supervisor is a total bitch impossible to deal with and another is cool with what I do as long as I do the work that is obviously needed. My co-workers range in personality from lazy to apathetic to young and promising. Other than that it's not that bad.

People used to work at 2 different companies out here like safeway and Albertsons meat cutters used to do it all the time from what I understand the union is the one who put a stop to it. I do understand if it was Wal-Mart or target as a 2nd job. Lots off people abused that working min hours at kroger once they get health care and then working a 2nd job at Wal-Mart

You should keep your job at X store (let's call it Bob's), and see if you can work at another Bob's in your town. There's a guy that works at a Kroger in one town and when he can, he comes to my town and works at Kroger here. I completely understand if transportation or such is an issue, because I have to walk to work sometimes. Or you could try working another position in your store alongside the one you have now. That way, if something happens in your dept. you'll have that other position.
