So, first, I just want to explain the situation because the whole thing just seems silly to me; I was bagging for an older gentleman and he was having a conversation with me and the cashier. While I was bagging the last items/putting them in the cart, the man thanks me. I don't quite remember, but I think I replied with 'sure thing' or something. I realize that this may not be the ideal response, but the man starts freaking out; he tells me that I'm supposed look him in the eye and say 'your welcome'. I smile because I honestly thought he was joking. Nonetheless, I reply with 'well, your welcome, sir' (not sarcastically or anything, but I did think he wasn't serious). He then asked me 'have you not developed the skill, yet?', although I misheard him and thought that he asked if I was still in development (training or whatever). I then started to take offense, as I thought he was directly criticizing my work. I just replied with 'I guess I'm still in development'. He then rephrased his previous question and said 'no one every taught you that as a kid?', to which I, confused, replied 'uhmm...I suppose'. Finally he asked why I didn't say it and I said 'well, I'm sorry sir'. He gave me a pretty cold look and walked away. I noticed that he didn't leave, he went over to the supervisors. I overheard him talking about me, but then I just tuned it out and continued working. They never confronted me about so I'm not sure if they just didn't care or if I'm just unaware of stuff like this. I'm on good terms with the supervisors and the FEM. Anyways, I just wanted to explain it to at least random people on the internet, since it seems very odd to me. I'm still on the probation period, but not stressing yet. Guess that's it...

It happens. Don't stress it. Many people come in looking for there to be a problem and that was it.

Ok, here goes: Not all, but a real LOT of old people are ass hats. Plain and simple. And I've absolutely had my fill of 'em.

I wouldn't sweat one drop over that non incident; looks like your management team had your back.

No matter how hard you try, some customers won't be happy with anything you do.

Yes and I've had the most problems with "older gentleman" too.  They come at you like they are big stuff because there's nothing you can do.  Most are at the end of their miserable life's and have nothing to do but complain.

Had that happen too. Customer came in around Christmas and I was bagging his groceries and talking to him and stuff. It was going well, I loaded up some groceries on the top and bottom of his cart (and I know there was stuff on the bottom because I remember letting him know and him acknowledging it). He leaves, comes back a few hours all furious about us not making sure all his groceries got on his cart and stuff and said that he'd bag his own groceries all the time now. The thing was that a customer had brought his bag in earlier because someone left it there.

Nothin' you can do.

Oh yea. a lot of that generation are a bunch of entitled whiners who think they're better than everyone.

Some older people are the nicest people you've ever met though.
