Can't figure out if I work for Geico or for Kroger

Fifteen minute shift breaks are barely enough time to find something to eat and drink, let alone rest.

Fifteen minutes may be able to save you on car insurance but they sure don't do much for a meal.

At least a 15 minute break allows the employees in our store to chain smoke 3-4 cigarettes to satisfy their nic-fit.

Actually, 15 minutes is enough if you'd stop idling about on your way to the break room.

Man, I haven't had a 15 minute break in eons.

Now it's just lunch and ten-minutes, or ten-minutes. And ten minutes is just fine. Just enough to get me a Red Bull, head outside, drink it and smoke a cigarette, briefly ponder where I went wrong in life, and then come back inside.

You can see if they will allow you to take a 30 minute break, in fact my store encourages it or you can ask them for an unpaid hour long break.

except you have to take 5-6 mins just to select/buy your snack of choice while on break or be fired.

Exactly.

By the time I get something to eat and drink, and make it to the break room, I've got about 10 minutes left.

Ditto. There's plenty of other times during my shift that I am resting. Like when I'm waiting on a vendor or waiting for a customer to check a million eggs.

Which is why you have to adapt and find solutions that can work.

Why can't you just bring your own food in the first place? Just find a good hiding spot for it until break.

Why not know what you're gonna get already?

Hell, why not just buy your snack before starting your shift?

That way, y'all would spend less time wasting it away.

Just suggestions, is all.

Ugh, not meaning to rant. I recall my high school days when kids would bitch about not having enough time to eat. Well, the fact that it took them three minutes to pick up a single plate because they're talking to their friend at the lunch line at the other side of the hall probably showed why.

Agreed. What I do is I select my purchases when I'm helping around the store with whatever and I 'Hide' it up front and say it's for a customer so they can't touch it. Then when my break comes, I go and grab it and rush to the line. It takes 1-2 minutes to grab the hidden item and make it to the line

In 15 minutes I usually go and buy myself a package of popcorn chicken and a coke. Then eat at the in store Starbucks and finish with 8 minutes to spare. Another option is buy a sandwich for few bucks and still have plenty of time to relax before heading back to work.

Just plan out ahead of time what you want to eat that way when you get your break you have plenty of time to eat and even mingle before you get back to work. Once you know the trick you'll be fine.

I usually bring a sandwich with me from home. Cheap, I know. But I just stick it in the break room fridge and no one's ever messed with my lunch bag yet.

If I don't do that then i get some salad (that I buy before i clock in and stick in the bakery cooler), or buy a bagel (that I just grab on my way up to clock out for break).

Even if I go to the bathroom that gives me roughly 12 minutes which is plenty of time to eat something imo.

You realize that can get you in trouble, right?

My manager really doesn't seem to care. He's after those who have been coming in late, no shows, and those who been stealing alcahol and drinking it in the bathrooms and back room area.

But yes, I do realize I can get in trouble for that. But if management were to do something over half the store would be written up for the same thing or something similar.

I've been at the same store for over 20 years and it's pretty much like that at our store too.  I'm not sure about the front end, but when most people go on break or lunch, they get their food first and then punch out.

My store is hard nosed about that.  Must punch out first to buy food.  People will skirt the rule by having someone off the clock or on break buy for them.

My dept head loves to shop on the clock though.  She'll pile up a bunch of crap at the service desk to buy before going home or ask us to ring her up because she wants a snack.

We are doing a store remodel and right now they are resetting all the isles,  Yesterday I spent most of my 15 minute beak looking for a drink because they had  moved in and then I stood in a line for a bout 5 minutes to go to uscan because this old lady with a bunch of groceries decided  she needed to go first lol
