Supervisor thinks she can tell people what to do off clock and out of uniform
Permalink

An employee who works on the front end came in to buy something and talk to a department manager who was on the clock. Both of them are very good friends and she stopped in to see how shes been. A supervisor who just clocked in ran straight up to her and said "You can't talk to her if she's on the clock, you know I hate when you do that." This same supervisor told her to go back out on lot when she came in to get a drink of water because it was 100 degrees outside and they did't fill the water cooler for the afternoon yet. She told the supervisor not to worry about it and all she was doing was getting a drink of water. Supervisor snapped, cussed at her and thought she was a threat to her authority. Everyone in our front end is tired of how all the front end supervisors think they are hot **** and above everyone else and the fact that they hold double standards against us. They can talk to other people who are on the clock while they're on the clock about their personal life and pull their phones out, but the second we do either one of those things it's the end of the world.

That's how things roll. It's a "Do as I say, not as I do" mentality. But cussing at your subordinates?? That's a big fat NO! Was she on the clock when the supervisor cussed her out?!? If someone did that to me, I'd politely suggest that we discuss it off Kroger property. Or we could act immaturely and cuss at the employee like a child. Your choice. That way it can't be construed as a challenge to a fight.

Um they are above the rest of you.  They also probably get the same pay for putting up with your bulls*t.  Often times I'll pull out my phones to communicate with people about work issues, if they can cover a shift, where they are if they're late.  Some people won't answer the store #, sometimes we get texts from coworkers about things or from the dept head.  I had one who seemed like he did nothing but text.  Lots of them will hide and talk to family or whoever and it annoys me no end because I'm busting my ass.  Some of them just need to focus and leave the personal stuff for breaks.

I don't mind letting people slack a little but when they can't put their damn phones down and are texting between checking customers in a busy line or while bagging groceries or not paying attention I have a problem.

I can understand that...HOWEVER, if a supervisor starts cussing an employee out, that's where I draw the line. If a supervisor started to cuss me out, I'd loose my job, but I'd tell them to take a flying f*ck at the moon. And walk off. A supervisor should set a good example for his/her subordinates.

I agree with everything you said except your first sentence. They are not "above" the other front end workers. They are scheduled in a position of authority. Big difference. Saying they are "above" the other workers makes it sound like they're inherently better. Such thinking is at the heart of the behavior we're talking about.
