Called in

Ok, so I had originally 24 hours this week. I got called in yesterday to work in my department (produce) from 3-7 pm, and I was happy to do so. This upped my hours to 28. Today I saw that Kroger was calling again to probably call me in. I ignored the call and the voice mail was from the front asking if I could run cashier for 4 hours. I never called back and I was wondering if I could get in trouble for this. I mean..I don't even work as a cashier. If it was my produce manager calling, I would have happily called back and came in again. I'm just worried they could fire me for that.

No they definitely can't! If anyone does get snippy about it just say you weren't home. But you can't be fired. :)

I'd do the same thing tbh. I'll happily work in my department if called/emailed in, but it'd be a cold day in hell before I accept a call-in to work on the front. Those people can't get their **** together and I'm not going to be a slave to some black-vest-wearing, clipboard-scribbling, chatty, acne-covered teenager.

Well it's not always a teenager. All of my FESes are over the age of 21. Now some of them aren't much older than that but we have adults working over us as supervisors, for the most part.

But I would not recommend Front End to *anyone*. Getting carts in the parking lot. Ugh. Irate or confused customers. No way man. Poor communication between supervisors and management resulting in all sorts of stupid crap. *sigh* If I leave this store -- "if," more like "when" -- I hopefully will have found a better job. I will tell them officially it's because of the parking lot. But the truth will be that Front End stinks.

Front end is where the glory's at, man. It's the daily battle in the long, ceaseless war. You, the cashier are a castle under constant siege from the barbarian hordes. For most people, it's only a matter of time before they crack. You see it in the eyes of the veterans. Those dead, staring-into-the-distance eyes devoid of any pleasure or humanity. And in the ones on their way, you see it too. The baggy eyes, wide open and beady, like the eyes of a hunted animal. Some will have facial ticks or twitches. Grown men can be reduced to tears. The toughest women can regress to the emotional state of a young, fragile girl.

But me, I love it. It's chaos, and there's the frailties of constantly changing management, sometimes competent, sometimes not. There's the nightmarish parade of customers, every one of them a potentially explosive grenade of ulcer-inducing complaints and demands. It's a firing zone, to be sure, but it's made me a better person. Hardship and suffering build character. I see the difficulties, no matter what they are, as challenges to be overcome. Sure, one day it will break me... but not this day!

...but no, they can't punish you for not answering your phone or coming in when you're not scheduled to. The schedule is king. Worst they can do is call you in less in the future.

If you do not have a scheduled shift for that day, you CANNOT get in trouble for ignoring the call or not calling back. You would only lose the opportunity at some more hours.

If they called you in to come in earlier than your expected shift, you can still refuse to go in earlier but you must work the scheduled shift at the least.

 Thanks!

I've been posting anonymously for a while now, but I registered just now cuz I like your no-nonsense attitude. Speaks to a good work ethic, which is sadly lacking these days. A lot of complainers, and I won't say I never complain, but a lot of people seem to expect something for nothing. Not me. The world owes me nothing. Every day is a gift and it could be a hell of a lot worse. Union might not be strong as it was, but we have one, which is more than a lot of employees out there have; and the pay might not be great, but it's more than a lot of people in the world make.

The most they can do is piss and moan "I had to do the items myself. I had to check myself" etc. But they CANNOT fire you. They can "get back" at you by not calling you in as often when they have more hour to give away, but that's the wort they can do.

agreed, there have been times i have gotten a call from them on my day off and i let it go also they have tried to call me to come in earlier which i couldnt do but I STILL showed up for my "shift".

On a call i got from my day off they wanted me to come in cause the guy that  was on shift was "by himself" working. Um....majority of the time i am on my own when working so "nope" i'm not coming in!

No, you can't get in trouble. If you weren't scheduled to work then they can't get mad if you don't come in when they call you.
