Do I have to ask to speak to a manager? Or can I just tell whoever picks up at the front end "I can't come in today"?

Tell whoever picks up. They can then relay the message to a manager.

Beware that whoever picks up that day MAY tell you that you'll have to talk to the manager. In that case, wait for the manager on the line.

At our store we have to talk to the manager on duty.

At our store you have to speak directly to the store manager or comanager.

If non available between 10:30pm and 8:30am, then leave a message with whoever answers.

I would always speak to a comanager or store manager just to cover all your bases.

Yup, definitely talk to a (co)manager. We've had cases where people have called in, talked to the front end office person, and the message never got relayed to management or to the CSR -.-

I called in 3 hours before my shift once and the store manager answered the phone.  I told him I was sick and he said bring in your excuse if you go to the doctor.  3 1/2 hours later my dept. head is calling to see if I'm coming into work.  Manager didn't even tell them I called.
