Question About Charity Donations
Permalink

We just started Stuff The Bus. Are we required to ask for donations?  I know in the past if cashiers didn't like doing it nobody pressured them.  Our new co manager is hell bent on squeaking every dollar out of every customer that comes through the line.  She even went so far as to tell one of the courtesy clerks to spy on the cashiers and let her know if we weren't asking for donations. She even tried to get a man who couldn't speak English and didn't understand her to give her a dollar.  She just kept saying dollar? Dollar? He kept shaking his head no.  I finally had to just talk over her to shut her up.    I need to know if they can make me ask for donations.  I just don't feel like helping out this time around. They also make you get on the pager when you get a donation and announce how much you got and say WOO HOO!  My customers usually tell me they will donate if I don't announce it.  I hired another cashier to do my announcements LOL!  Bought her a drink and told her to announce a few times here and there.

Can they MAKE me ask for donations?

Afaik, I believe they can. It's stupid, and I silently refuse to do it, but as long as they say it's part of the cashier job description, they can make you do it.

As a cashier you are basically the managers B***H. There's a manager in my store that everyone is tense when she is around. Barking orders constantly, Do this Do that,  Acknowledge the customer, tell the customer, "Thank you I hope you were satisfied with my service by taking the survey at the bottom of receipt to rate my service and Thank you please come again." No one has time for all that with one customer after another.

Once her shift ends and she leaves the store ALL employees are relax and themselves. Actually we are even more friendly towards the customer because we don't have to give them a big speech.

As far as charity donations in my store its up to the customer to voluntarily donate we might mention it to the customer but it's not enforced.....at least not yet.

I'm fortunate enough to only have one store manager who would like for us to ask. He only reminds us every now and then as a form of encouragement instead of a hellbent quest for funds.

I try to pick out customers to ask. I avoid the ones who look too snobby or "too busy". Worked out for me so far. Eight school supplies donated and a few dollars here and there.

I'm going to find a way out of it.  They can't really say it's part of my job if they haven't enforced it in the last three years I've been at Kroger.  The reason I'm angry is because for the longest time I was the ONLY one in the store that would even ask for donations.  I average around $60 to $100 in donations per shift. I even got my picture in the newsletter once (AGAINST MY WILL), they wouldn't take no for an answer.  So for them to ask a courtesy clerk to spy on me and report back if I'm not doing it is just pissing me of!!!

I'm probably going to have to pay off the courtesy clerk like I had to do with the announcements.

Walgreens has a much better method. Donating is just an option on the credit/debit card machine.

My store has a manager like this. 1+1 compliance is just shot whenever he's there because the cashiers have to give every customer a lecture on how a survey works. Whenever he leaves the lines drop.
