Long time employees dropping like flies?

At my store in the past 6 months we've had 2 long time employees retire.  Neither one was really old or had any physical reasons for retiring, they both started with Kroger at a very young age.  In the same time we've had our long time Head Grocery Clerk give up that position, and his back-up who took the job after him gave it up just a few weeks ago.  Now we have a Head Grocery Clerk with Just over 10 years on the job compared to the 40 plus we used to have.  In the break room we have lots of long time employees couting down the days until they can retire.  And some who are nearing eligibility for retirement, still want to work, just not for Kroger.

They main reason I'm hearing for this is Key Retailing, Que Vision, etc;.  And at the Kroger across town I noticed they were having a retirement party for 2 employees and while I only know one of them, he's not really that old and has no serious health problems.  

Are any of you guys and gals noticing that going on?  Some of these employees aren't worth a damn but some of them we've lost or getting ready to lose are good employees.

i'm seeing that kind of shift a little in my store too.  it's no longer fun.  

from what i've heard the company culture has changed so much and the contracts get worse and worse. some of the old employees don't think it's fair on new employees who get basically nothing and the huge lack of support.

 The latest thing under the contract in my division is employees still get holiday pay after one year of service but it counts as separate pay rather than part of the work week.  Employees under the old contract get paid overtime if they work over 32 hours during a holiday week.  The holiday pay counts as 8 hours (32+8=40).  Employees under the newest contract have to work over 40 hours in a holiday week to get overtime pay.  They still get the 8 additional hours for holiday pay but the hours don't count as part of their work week.

I know that one of my store's co-managers almost let out a cry of joy when she found out she got a promotion to HR. Now instead of having 90-hour work weeks hauling **** around, she gets to have a 9-5 desk job with higher pay.

I am one of the old time employees who is also counting down to retirement. I am sick of que vision, elms and etc. tired of being told that if cashiers does not get a high score we will be wrote up even though the union says that we cannot be written up. the union is not really for you like a long time ago. the old Kroger was a lot better than now. you could do your work without fear of being suspended for something that you cannot control. I have ten months until I can sign my retirement papers and every day before I get out of my car I say a prayer to jesus to watch over me until I can get out of Kroger. I have never regretted working for Kroger but I do not like the idiots in corporate that needs to actually work in the store and see what we go through with. thosepeople would not last a week if they had to deal with customers like we do. I feel for people who does not have enough time to retire from Kroger and has to continue to still work for them.

Can't be a thousand because over here I feel / get at least ten percent of that each time I work.
So maybe 900-something for you. :P

 How exactly is Kroger's hiearchy? I know of a bakery coordinator who became a co-manager but she said it was a promotion. Then there's also been a co-manager who was "promoted" to produce coordinator. So which one's higher? And is either of them higher than district ops? Gosh this is confusing for a grocery store.

Clerk -> Asst Dept Mgr -> Dept Mgr -> Co-Manager -> Associate Manager -> Store Manager at the store level.

Then you have business unit which consist of coordinators, all immediately answer to the district manager. 

 

That doesn't mean that coordinators outrank store managers though. They're more like the district manager's minions.

What the anon above me said. Those "coordinators" aren't exclusive to a specific store's department. They're like the person who makes sure that all of the specific departments within the district are either consistent and doing what's supposed to be done, including promotions, sale, procedures, etc.

 wow! to have worked that long especially at kroger you definitely have my respect! I have heard about that reading some of the older post that Kroger used to be a place that you could work without all this BS i see them doing in the stores now. Funny thing is we had some managers getting a tour of store and i am thinking, "do these people REALLY know what they are getting into?' From what i have seen and talking to other employees most of them "dont know" what their doing.

from what i have seen during my time working here is your NOT going to get any support from management. So now when i go into work i do what i can and the rest i leave be.

Okay newbie here. What exactly is a lead manager? Do I only report to him/her? About scheduling, etc. Who do I ask about receiving a union book? Should I? Do the office people like the union?

"Lead manager" can be ambiguous but I'm assuming it means your dept head. You report to anyone who is above you like supervisors, dept mgmt, and store mgmt. if you are in the union, or aren't but are in a right-to-work state, ask around for a union steward. They're required by federal law to give you a book if you're covered under the contract.

 District Coordinators are just glorified Co-Managers/Unit Managers.  They get pushed back into stores as a Co or Unit Manager eventually, or they move up to a Division position.
