Do NOT WORK FOR THE KROGER COMPANY. King SOOPERS, ETC

disbelief The company was great and in demand back in 1890 to 1995. Now it is saturated, and ran by money hungry douche bags. if you get hired, you will not make much to live on until you have been there over 5 years.  There is no great benefits anymore, and as time progresses it will get worse. No one wants to work at a company were you are forced into management,  then demoted if you get sent to a bad store. As a manager, you will be transferred to numerous stores a god awful amount of times. I am a produce manager and I am definitely burned out and not going to go in starting tomorrow. learn how to improve employee relations instead of customers for a while, or the turnovers will increase starting with me!furious

I couldn't agree more.  I played the transfer game and then they reorganized the zones.  I got caught in a store were the 30+ year employees weren't doing retailing/green sheets/ anything the way the "company" wanted.  The two most senior guys play golf with the store manager so guess who was told to transfer to a store with an hours more drive one way.  I told them no and took a dollar pay cut.........it would have cost 3 dollars an hour in gas. Since then 6 people have been fired/demoted for stealing, sexual harassment, cussing, or just being dumbasses.

The pay scale is set up the way it is because they don't EXPECT most people to go through 5 years. It's entry-level retail, and that's entry-level retail. The expectations are that you are going to go to college, become an astronaut or whatever, and leave the company. So they don't invest in you. They expect you to invest in them, 5 years caps you out... or get promoted and you don't have to wait that long.

The trouble with that is we can't keep decent help around.  When folks simply no call, no show after a few weeks or come in and give notice and say "I got a job at target making more and no dues" then its not working.   We can keep the people with a few years around, but can't keep the new hires.  The new hires that we do keep, generally do stuff (call in sick, late, leave early, etc) that most employers wouldn't put up with.  You can have all the programs in the world to set standards, but at the end of the day, if people feel there not getting rewarded, they don't care, and we're not on the program.

I agree that it makes it hard to keep decent workers. Really hard-working, energetic, generally pleasant workers are constantly thinking about jumping ship. The physical and mental stress is tremendous for such a pitifully low pay rate for 4 years.

That said, there are worse jobs that also pay crap. Wal-Mart, fast food, day care centers, home health, waiting tables (*ugh*)... there are definitely worse jobs at entry-level. I just try to show a good attitude (fake, but looks good) all the time, try to get recognized, and try to get promoted. I'm lucky to not *need* the money. I couldn't pull it off living alone.

Its never a good sign when you hear the phrase, "they run off the good workers" at your store!

I cant see how anyone can really have a genuine good attitude after you experience all the chaos and drama at kroger!

I agree with you. I have almost 28 years with Kroger and I have worked hard for this company but in the last few years I have been told by management that I am not a good worker. I think because I have so many years with Kroger they want rid of the older people. they show favoritism to employees with less time. I have never regretted working for Kroger but in the last few years I hate going to work because of the way I have been treated. next year I am looking into my retirement and I will be signing the papers. if I could bring my old Kroger back I would but that is gone forever. I feel like if it aint broke don't fix it. Kroger needs to get rid of these stupid programs and go back to the old way.

They just keep adding more "stupid programs" and keep uping the workload. This company isnt going to change or do anything simplify things. As someone else stated "everyone is expendable"!!
