Worst employee ever

I work in the produce department and this new hire is so damn lazy. He can't do anything right, so we always put him on corn duty. He even does that really slow. I hate working with him because it makes my workload harder. I've talked with the produce manager and he feels the same way. I don't think he can get fired for just being slow at what he does though. Any advice?

At least he shows up.  We have one woman in our department who somehow manages to work only one or two days every two years, and yet she's still listed as an employee.  I don't know who her doctor is, but I wish he'd give me an excuse to take off work for two years and return with full seniority and benefits.  The worst part is there's nothing  wrong with her.  She just doesn't want to work.

Its almost impossible in produce to get rid of someone.  There is no standard to how fast things have to be done (like freight crew) and seems to be no interest by mangers going after people who leave the department a mess.  Even with key retailing wave evelenty billion most folks do what they want, unless we have company.  They were trying to get guys to quit by giving 'em hours they didn't want, but that didn't work or folks switched up availablity.  Now the solution is that we will schedule folks between 4 and 6 hours instead of 8.  They keep hoping someone will quit, but it won't happen.  Now people just pass the blame and managers complain.

They are aware they don't have to accept a change of availability, right?...

Here if you're a Part time employee you can change your availablity and they're stuck.  Some managers wont play ball, but eschedule has fixed that for the most part. Hours will get cut though.  Some people just grumble and take what they get.

We have a guy like that in our produce... Actually we have 3 of them, one of them is so stupid he managed to shoot himself in the armpit while hunting... I have been praying that they'll at least replace one of them and that the new one will be better, we'll probably end up with somebody worse though.

Eschedule changed nothing. Employees don't change their own availability, they submit a request in eschedule that still has to be approved (and can be denied) by mgmt. If they don't like it, they don't have to approve it.

Or, if they don't like the new availability request, they'll approve it buy give you the bare minimum hours.

Can't work Sunday? Tough luck, guess you'll only work 16 hours for two days of the week. Sorry.

Under our contract if you're part time you can restrict your availablity.  However it generally results in a lose of hours.  Thats usually what people want if their in school or have child care issues.  Before eschedule we had change of availablity sheets that we could fill out.  Managers would often ignore them.  Then people would complain and managers would say fill out another sheet.  I got told this once, pulled out the noteook where the forms were and showed him and said "do you really need another?"  lol

Right. My contract is the same. In all contracts, you can change your availability, but mgmt always has the ability to veto the change. Your mgmt "losing" the new availability sheets is their way of avoiding telling employees no.
