Shift Pressure

My first day was supposed to be Monday. I completed all the CBL/training stuff like two days ago, and was told I wouldn't have a first day till then. Only today I get called in "Oh can you come in for some hours towards the end of the night". Normally with most jobs its not a problem since it usually ends at ten or so, and I don't have to worry about car use. Long story short I share a truck with my father (which usually translate into him taking me places because he refuses to let me use it for more than quick errands), and Saturday later nights I can't really borrow the truck in case a) its "date night" for him and my stepmom or b) they head off to church for the early service on Sunday and doesn't want to be kept up.

Anyways, like I said, this usually isn't a problem, but if its "unscheduled usage" I have to clear it with him. When I get the call I'm trying to tell my Front End that while at the same time contact my father, and instead "just call us back in a second" that I'm used to hearing with employers when I say I need to make sure its okay with him to use the truck I get "But you said you have full availability". Which yeah I do because I don't have another job, go to school at the moment, or mind getting scheduled anytime. Though I didn't take it to mean that they can call me on the days I'm supposed to have off, and say come in between [blank] and [blank], because you have open availability.

Does this mean that even if I'm expected to have days off unless I ask for it off with a reason beforehand I can be told to come in? Or at least highly highly pressured since I couldn't even get it out that I needed to get vehicle usage approved before they were "reminding" me that i had "full availability on my schedule, and you're not saying this is a problem now are you?" Since honestly there's sometimes when I won't have the truck just because two people use it.

I'd ended up agreeing to go into the shift tonight  because I had the okay, but in the future how do I deal with the Managers (especially on the days I have other plans and such)?

To keep it simple, tell Kroger you can't swing it tonight. Tell them you already have plans with your family, and can't really get out of it.

It'll save you some stress and anxiety.

For the future, make sure you've got some kind of understanding with your folks, and let them know that sometimes Kroger will indeed want to call you in, and figure out something with transportation issues.

As far as managers, you can always say "No" if it's not a scheduled day.  They can't make you come in or anything.

You put full availability when you have to ask to borrow the truck? Do you live near a bus stop or within walking distance of the Kroger? If not then you need to work out a carpool or something. This will be chaotic for you.

Like its literally five ten minutes from home, and usually borrowing the truck is never a problem since my father is on worker's comp. Its only a problem when I get called in on days I'm not scheduled. Since he expects the truck free to do his "things" (he does a lot of craigslist sales and such), and we usually have to negotiate the times I need to use it.

Its not like I hadn't informed the store about this, and I made sure to tell them my open availability is because there's no set times i cannot work. Though if they needed me to come in on a day off they would need to let me know as soon as possible, so I could work it out with my dad. The manager that hired agreed to this though has since been moved and i'm not sure if anyone else has read over things. I'd like to think things aren't that unorganized though.

It's Kroger - things are that unorganized.  Talk with your new manager and explain your transportation issues.

Usually I get a call in the early morning hours...say, sometime between 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., and asking me if I can come in and cover someone's shift.
I'll never know who called out until I get there and look at the paper schedule.

That is my one personal rule regarding that, by the way.
If I tell you I am coming in on my day off -- If I agree to it and show up -- and I know I am working for someone who called out earlier, I will make sure I know that name.
Not for any vindictive reasons. For the reason that it's a lot easier to tell a CSM, FES or management personnel whom I am working for at the time, because sometimes that's all they know is that person.

For the most part, if I agree early enough in the morning, the parking lot schedule has been made out with my name on it in place of that person.
But whenever I get a call from Kroger, if I can know it's them (usually by listening to the answering machine) I let them leave a message.

Once, they called around 9 a.m. asking if I could come in.
I called twenty minutes later and they had already found someone else.
