If you're late, you can't make up the minutes at the end of your shift? Huh?

So I have been with Front End as a courtesy clerk (effing HATE the term "bagger") for seven months.

Yesterday (Saturday) I went in 30 minutes late because I was thinking I had to be there at 3:45 rather than the 3:15 I was scheduled.
I got there and went to the customer service desk. Our Front End Supervisor(s) at the time said that they weren't even aware that I was late. *sigh* Nice, yet frustrating, had I not said anything.
Although I didn't get into trouble for it, I tried to "make up" the 30 minutes by leaving at 8 p.m. rather than 7:30 p.m. After all, we were a bit busier at that time anyway, plus that does technically pick up the 30 minutes that would have run 3:15 - 3:45.

Well. The Front End Supervisor around the 8 p.m. time (and god damn it, I always feel like Office Space where the guy says he has eight bosses...) says "Did you talk to [B-i-t-c-h manager], because the policy is that if you are late, that's YOUR fault, and you can't make up that time at the end of your shift."

SEVEN MONTHS I have been there.
MANY times...not quite A LOT but more than a week's worth, let's put it that way...I have clocked in say, 10, 15 minutes, and 'made up' the time at the end of my shift.
So let's take a hypothetical situation. Say I'm scheduled 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. But I don't clock in (for whatever reason) until 2:20 p.m.
I've got a high enough work ethic to stay until 6:20 p.m. to "ride out" that full four hours.

I've "ridden out" enough times in seven months to have someone say something. But no one has ever approached me.
I have no write-ups for tardies. I've never been spoken to about them, not even by b-i-t-c-h manager.
In fact probably the latest I have ever been "late" clocking in has been about 15-20 minutes, and then I've usually had good excuses (Traffic, weather, whatever).

So why in seven months am I just now being told that if someone comes in late that they can not (or should not? I don't know...) stay to 'ride out' that time slot?
For christ' sake, our Front End is so poorly managed and so low on manpower that they try to pull us courtesy clerks back onto bagging almost immediately after we've been on the parking lot.
YOU try pushing a combined 1,000 + pounds of carts for an hour straight in the hot weather. You need a quick breather, even if it is to gulp down two pints of the tap water Kroger calls its bottled water brand.
And this is the same Front End that at least three times a day 'all courtesy clerks to the front' or calls for bagging help from other departments.

You would think that 'riding out' the entire amount of your scheduled time would be appreciated.
I mean, yea, I can see maybe someone looking outside in thinking "Well, they only did it because they want to make sure they get all of their hours, the greedy jerk."
That *is* true -- if I'm scheduled for 28 hours, 22 hours, 24.50 hours, whatever -- I want to get the full amount.
But it's mostly just a high work ethic where I say to myself "Okay, they want me for four hours, I stepped in 15 minutes late, so I'm packing in that 15 minutes to make sure they get their four hours."

I just am stunned that in seven months no one, not the B-i-t-ch who calls herself our Front End Manager or anyone else has ever said anything like this to me.
Not that I think she was lying or misinformed, but I'm starting to question the FES who told me this yesterday evening.

For crying the hell out loud, the scheduling is boffoed enough. If ANYTHING motivates me to leave Kroger, it's to find a job that provides me the same hours each day and doesn't make me feel as if I am working a swing shift 24/7/365 or in an on-call position that has nothing to do with on-call. I mean yea a nine to five job would be monotonous, true, but so is Kroger and a nine to five job would probably pay more. Oh hell who are we trying to kid, it  *would* pay more.
Why do I rant about THAT? Because in my head I was thinking "3:45, 3:45, 3:45" rather than "3:15" despite checking with what I wrote down and greatpeople.me.
And I was thinking that way because I have a work schedule that would make people outside of Kroger wonder if I was even still conscious after having dealt with and working these ridiculous randomly-scheduled shifts.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day.
Anyone else been told this or heard of this?
That if you as an employee are late, unless you clear it through management, screw you and you can't stay to work the 'amount' of the shift?

I'm not in trouble, haven't been written up, I just want to know if anyone else has this same policy or has been told about this policy or if it's just my store or whatever.

I guess it just depends on how your FES is breathed down on by those above him.

My FES always allows us to "make up" hours if we're late (and if he can find us something to do), but he stops when someone from above gets on his case about it. He eventually allows it again when things die down in a few weeks.

Then there's FES people who are constantly nagged about why the front end people are clocking out later than scheduled, regardless of hours worked.

Policy is that you have to clear it with management. normally they are fine with it and it's not a big deal, but apparently your FES is a prick.

It's not like it's overtime if you work the same amount of hours.... You can do far worse things.

This FES is...okay, I guess.
Never had too much of a problem with her, and she's one of about six that we have as FES.
At any given time we usually have two FES on hand, then two Customer Service desk reps that also function / work as FES if needed.

I guess it was just the policy she thought and she was caught off guard or surprised that I had mentioned it.
Still, this is the first time anyone within an overseeing (management) role had mentioned it to me.
She wasn't really a b-i-t-c-h about it. She was more of the role of "In case you weren't aware".
Still, from now on, I'm watching my punch-ins and punch-outs.

Technically, you could get in trouble for being late, too, so it's probably not a battle worth fighting. Just let it go and watch your punches unless you get permission ahead of time.

on my front end, if I can see I'll need them I may ask if late people wants to make up their time but the answer is pretty much always no.

my guess is that FES has been pressured about controlling hours and not letting people clock out late.

You don't have any right to that missed time because you were late through your own fault.  Just suck it up.  We've had write ups for people who were clocking in late thinking they had until 7 min after.

Well you were SUPPOSED to be there at a certain time. If you're late then you don't have a right to make those hours up.

Let me guess...you are the same "Anonymous" who made an entire post-thread about me yesterday?

I has a fan club! I is teh happy!

Maybe you should go check the Nutrition aisle and see if there is anything you can eat or drink for energy.
With more energy in your body, you might fix this "I'm a crabby dumbass" problem you seem to have lately.

Most other departments have a fit if you don't make up your time.  I don't know about front end but in other departments it's not fair to the other workers if they have to take up the slack for someone who is scheduled 6 hours but only works 4 1/2 because they came in late but left at their regularly scheduled time.  If you're late, you're late but do work the number of hours you are scheduled.

at the store I used to work at before I transferred, I was always told you had to make up your hours, and they made you make them up.  If you were 30 min late, they made you stay 30 min over.

My store lets us make it up in our department. In the feature if they ask you to "stay over" just them that just like being late to work and not making it up. Im just here for my scheduled shift.

What if I made a post saying I had let a shopping cart hit someone's car but just walked away?
Nah. Too easy. and I swear it hasn't happened! Yet.

I'm sure I could come up with something so horrible and controversial that my fanbase would exceed your own :P

Well sorry to disappoint you my teenage friend (I'm assuming you are a teenager because your posts read like you aren't paying attention in English class again...) but I am not 13. Nor am I 16.
As for being "****ed for life" (*asterisks intentionally left in place) well, I have a life, and I have a job, which is two more things than you seem to be in possession of lately.

You don't have to read my posts.
This forum clearly shows who starts one and who responds.
If you don't like it, you don't have to be here.

And this forum is in part for letting off steam.
Like, I could write, "Hey, did you see the comments from that teenage jackass? Does he have a chip on his shoulder or what? I bet he's never even seen a girl naked."
You know, something like that. Although that is more of an insult than a 'letting off steam'.
Maybe if I phrased it like "This customer today acted like that teenage jackass on here that I bet hasn't even seen a girl naked."
Better, but still insulting.

Please feel free to find the Expanded Kitchen aisle and hit yourself in the head with one of our frying pans until you are no longer able to read.
That way you know that you will have an excuse for your poor grammar and manners and you won't be able to read anything  I write ever again.

Have a nice day oh pal of mine.
By the way the fan club meets once a month at your mom's house.
I'll let you wonder why.

your insults(?) make no sense. If I didn't have a  job, why the hell would I post on a kroger forum? Also trying to insult me as a "man" when i'm a female does nothing. Your insults insinuate that you are maybe 17 or 18, possibly 22 since most male brains don't mature until 30. But, have fun make your work more complicated than it already is.

Also I can reply, post, do whatever I want. So "you don't have to read it", is true but I can always reply to how dumb this topic is.

Sort of how your post is dumb, but I still responded?
