Grocery Manager possibly stepping down.

I heard that my grocery manager might step down and go back to working days on the front end.  If the grocery manager position becomes available, should I try to get it?  I've been with Kroger for 30 years and been on the night stocking for 14 years.

I don't know if I really want the headache.  I'm always on time and never call off unless I'm really sick, the other day we had a huddle at the beginning of my shift and the co-manager complained to us that the grocery manager was late and that she wanted to replace him and she would tell him to his face, and he was 30 minutes late last night.

Feel free to sign the posting, but unless your store is considered a dead-end store, there will be more qualified candidates who apply. They'll typically pick a qualified assistant with 2 years experience over a stocker with 14.

You don't want the headache for an extra $0.50.

You can find the $0.50 in your couch cushions and experience less stress.

Grocery managers are essentially a co-manager for third shift. They get paid better than any other hourly employee in the store and they often work more than the standard 40 hours a week.

0.50$ where you are? How is there any incentive for anybody to take that position?

Here it is a little over $4.00 an hour extra from a topped out grocery clerk and $2.75 more than the backup.   Whether or not it's worth it to you depends a LOT on your individual store.   If you're surrounded by mostly good, reliable workers then taking the position will definitely be something you could look into.   However, high volume stores with lots of revolving help can be quite stressing to handle.   Also to note, it depends on your financial and life situation.   If you are wanting a low stress job and don't really need to make the extra money then it probably isn't the best for you.

Something to keep in mind too, things are always changing in grocery.   People often underestimate how hard it can be to keep an entire grocery department looking good and full at all times.   Experience is absolutely necessary to be a good one.   It really isn't hard to go over your OOS if you don't keep up with the numbers at all times.

Also, leads/management positions will be up to the store manager's discretion(ie best person for the job), not based on seniority.   And if it's in a good location you're gonna have a lot of outsiders apply for it which would diminish your chances quite significantly.

One more thing, in our division they are starting to roll out a new lead/management training course because of a lot of inexperienced department managers making their way into the system.   They may want you to go through that before you apply.  Then again, I don't know your specific situation and how much training/knowledge you have when it comes to running grocery.

Cheers

Having a boss with bad behavior turns our environment into inferior and miserable workplace. They become influential in wrong way especially in office performance that makes employee demoralized. Instead of having a comfortable and inspiring day, you will become uneasy and nervous. You can get a payday loan to pay the bills while waiting on your check.

Assuming a $4 pay premium with an average of 40 hours a week, that would be roughly $8,000. That's BEFORE we factor in the overtime that a grocery manager ALWAYS encounters. I'd say it's well worth it. :)

This is the OP my grocery manager just got fired for stealing time.  He came in thirty minutes late the other night and lied about it and told the payroll lady that he was on time, she reported it to management and they checked the cameras and found out he was lying.

Yikes!

Sometimes, I wish they would catch my previous night manager farting around on camera.

I was part time(6 years) and would be back-up every once in a while.  I once had my night manager complain to me about how we get the work done when I am in charge, but when he gets back, we go slow.  What he didn't realize is that I actually worked with the rest of the crew.

Man, I wish they'd act on stuff like that here.   People write false times in the book  a lot, stealing hours and have all been reported but nothing is ever done about it.

UPDATE : Our new grocery manager is a 20 year old girl that stepped up to the plate from frozen food.  Our back up has been training her and now he just put in his two weeks notice, he used to be the grocery manager in the past before the other grocery manager that was fired for stealing time.

He said that Kroger has been running him down mentally and physically, I told him the same here they are doing it to me too.  Back on Christmas eve day it was a mad house and none of the stockers were finished on time including myself and the store manager called us all up to the office for a huddle and gave all of us resignation papers to sign if we wanted to quit.  She said that she was going to start writing us up if we don't finish on time.

The store manager is always bragging on herself  about how she got to where she is at and she can't believe it, and she has bragged about meeting the CEO of Kroger and that they are down to earth and cool they are, but she is not she is a Nazi.  And she talks about watching Shark Tank but I have never seen it and the title doesn't sound to good, but I think it is about inventors trying to sell their ideas, inventions to get them to market.

Sounds a lot like the situation one of our local stores is facing.   A powerhouse, newly expanded, remodeled store that does 1m+ a week has gone through about 4-5 grocery managers in 2014, primarily due to the fact that the store manager is an ex-military and can't get out of that mindset at work.   Expects perfection and is very harsh, literally nobody can stand working with him from the bottom all the way to his superiors.   They posted for the job a few weeks ago, and literally NOBODY even applied for it division wide, because of how his reputation is.    So who do they get?   A front end supervisor with literally zero grocery experience.   Has no idea how to condition, use a gun, any standards, how to use any computer function at all.   He's currently training at our store for 1 week with our grocery manager, then they are going to train at his for another week, and that's it.   He's expected to run a powerhouse store after 2 weeks of total training from a guy who, quite frankly, is a horrible teacher. lol   I know how that's going down already.

Lol.  I work at a powerhouse store and they too have burned thru several night managers and full time clerks.  The full timers keep transferring out because it is too much work!  I like keeping busy, so I like being there.
