Steps to transferring departments
Permalink

about 6 months ago I was moved from courtesy clerk to Deli clerk and have had difficulties with the shift I'm working regularly due to outside responsibilities, and need to have earlier shifts.  I've also recently been given new tasks im not comfortable with, and would like to transfer to another department.  What steps should I take, and whaI pitfalls should I expect in my efforts?  I've talked to some fellow associates about my intentions and they all say the deli manager will make sure no other dept. managers will take me.  Can he really do that? I thought the union protected us from that sort of behavior.  I love working at Kroger and don't want to leave, but I cant remain In the deli.  I also tried talking to both the assistant and head deli manager on several occasions about getting Earlier shifts, but they jus say I dont have enough seniority, but theyve recently hired a new person who works 9 to 5 regularly, and has never worked for Kroger or in the union before. Any feedback is appreciated

Deli has one of the highest turnover rates at Kroger. Getting transferred to another department depends on availability of hours/positions in other departments as well as approval from management. Can the deli manager prevent you from transferring? No, but if they have bad things to say about you, it'll make it difficult to get approval. But, of course you'd have to prove that for the union to be able to do anything. Good luck with that.

As far as seniority, are you part time or full time? All full time employees regardless of how long they've worked there have seniority over part timers.

If I were you, I'd address your concerns to store management and request it. There's not much more you can do.

Full time people have a more difficult time transfering departments because there has to be a full time position open in the department they're transfering to.  Part timers can move around more easily.

This is true.  Especially with the mass phase-out of full time positions with the health care situation & always looking for ways to reduce expenses finding a full time position can be very difficult.   Here, any time a full timer quits on night crew, they are to be replaced with 2 part timers.  I'm sure this is common everywhere too.  So even if a full time person leaves, that doesn't mean you'll get the transfer.
