It does not have to be anything in detail. Just simply put. I (name) will to resign my current position as a department head and return to the position as a clerk. Keep in mind, (and I seen this happen) management could make you work in another department or try to force their hand and make you go to another store as retaliation. Best wishes and good luck.
I agree with Indy1979, in fact.. I wouldn't make the letter very detailed at all. Just state your request for demotion and be done with it.

Some stores are aweful. And managers are just as bad.
A coworker won a Grug/GM manager bid for another store. She has worked in Drug/GM for many years and knew what she was doing. She told me the store is hostile between workers from other departments. Other departments would sabotage her workflow. This was constant throughout the store for all the departments. She called it,"Departmental backstabbing". An example is they would purposely bury her pallets and make them time consuming and hard to get to. Then, the store manager would demand to know why she isn't getting her job done. She told them, "C'ya, I resign the position." She was very lucky and got her Dr/GM clerk position back at our store. When I move stuff around in the backroom, I try to leave the pallets I know are going out first in front and easy to get to. Makes it easier for my coworkers in the other departments and makes a happy store.
Another coworker had worked as a Dairy clerk for over 20 years. He signed and won a bid for Recieving clerk at another store. He didn't like it. There is a lot of computer learning and more to it than just watching vendors bring stuff in. He resigned the position. The manager tried to put him in their Dairy department. He said, "No, I want to be in produce." He had more than enough seniority to bump anyone in produce he wanted to. So, he is now a Produce clerk. I saw him 4 months ago and he doesn't seem as happy as normal.
I get concerned when I sign bids for other stores. The personality dynamics are different at all the stores I am sure. The Dr/GM clerk mentioned above begged me not to sign a bid for the store she just got back from. I just lol'd. I probably would have liked being there and running their ratrace track.

I was searching for the answer to such a question. But still, I don't really know what is better to do in such a situation. Maybe just search for another job would be better decision.
