Am I Going to Get Fired?

I've been working as a courtesy clerk at my local kroger store for a little over three weeks, and as a new employee, I'm on a 30 day probation period.

So last night I worked a closing shift (get the liquor caps from under the register, get go-backs from under the register, clean the registers, get all of the carts from the lot, refill ice, etc.).  I've already worked 3 closing shifts before with no problem at all.  On this particular night, i cleaned out the lot early, the ice was filled early, and the go backs were filled early.  I was scheduled to work till 11:30 (the store closes at 11), but the manager said that if everything's done I can go ahead and clock out.  I clocked out, bought a frozen pizza, and as I was walking out the door, the manager said "Just so you know, you were scheduled to 11:30, and the ice needs to be filled, and there's still some go backs under the register.   I'm going to have to answer to the owner why the ice isn't filled in the morning, just so you know."  I froze, confused and a bit scared.  I apologized, and walked out the door.  Once I walked out the door, I noticed about 4 carts in the lot.  In my training I was given a lecture about not working at all after you clock out, or after the allotted hours.  Since I already clocked out, i decided to just drive myself home.  As I was driving home, i began to realize how threatening what the manager said to me sounded, and I'm quite scared I'm going to lose my job.  Can anyone tell me if someone usually loses their job for something like this?  Like I've said, I've worked here for a little over 3 weeks, and have done my job well.  I've worked very hard, but once again, I'm still in my probation period.

from what I see CCs doing these days thats par for the course.  Find out what you're expected to do when closing.  Check out with your manager before you clock out.

Definitely check with a manager before you clock out to see if everything is truly done or not. As per being fired? Depends heavily on how well you're liked and whether they interpreted this situation as purposely done or just an accident. But if your story checks out and this is the only thing that's happened, I highly doubt you'll be fired.

The owner?  The owners are the stockholders.  Is he planning on contacting every stockholder to tell them the ice wasn't filled?

lol I was at another large supermarket (owned by another large corporation not publically traded, I think) on line checking out.  The cashier who was checking me out was talking to the cashier next to her (which I find so annoying), she kept telling the other cashier "So, remember I needed (whatever) day off?"  "I saw the owner, he's so nice..., I asked him for the day off and he gave it to mevwithno problems..."  The other cashirer kept saying "the owner, what are you talking about?"  She kept going on, yea the owner, you know, his picture is on the wall..."  The other cashier is like "no ident know, I've never see. The OWNER in here, I didn't know one person owns this place.  And he's been in here?"  "Oh yea, he's here like almost every day...  I don't think he works nights..."  Just then some guy walks by...  and she's like "there he is!"  The other goes "you mean the store manager?"

lol I don't know how people can go through life being so blind and not mnowingbthe difference between a store manager and an owner...  I guess they're used to the old school world (even all this women was maybe only mid 40's) where grocery stores are mom and pop places not corporate conglomerates...

I'm a CC and I don't do any of that except clear the lot of carts and go-backs. Seems like your store asks a lot out of the CCs. At my store, it's the responsibility of the cashiers to clean the registers and take care of the liquor caps. As for refilling the ice, the people in grocery do that at my store. I feel sorry for you. We have to do so much already as CCs and that's just pushing it, in my opinion. You should really say something because it's not really fair to you to have to do all of that, especially by yourself. As for you getting fired, don't really sweat it. Unless the store manager sees breaking of company policy then they won't fire you. Also, in your defense, the manager DID tell you that you could clock out if everything was done.

Hmmm it seems different Kroger's CC's have different jobs when it comes to closing.

For me, I must clear the lot, do under stock, clean the bottle room, and trash.

It is frustrating when you get things done early...then some more things pop up such as carts and trash. It's irritating. It's like either get started early but have to do it again if it pops up, or end up staying over a bit just to finish things up.

My Kroger isn't a 24 hour one. We close at midnight. So, it really irritates me when I get ALL the carts in close to closing but there's just a few customers left in checkout with their carts FILLED with food. So I'm supposed to stand around and wait? Pft. Manager does say the lot has to be completely cleared sooo I end up grabbing the last few carts even after punching out.

That is wrong of your manager though. He said since things were done that you could leave. Then he changes his mind? You should have explained to him on the spot that you did complete your tasks but at some point the ice got used up again and such.

I usually close with the same guy all the time, so we take turns filling bags and ice, we close at 12 so whoever is on carts at 11 does ice before hand and whoever is inside at 11 restocks the bag racks and picks up liquor caps and jewel cases.
