A bit confused on pay rate

I need some help.  I looked on my profile, and, well, okay, I am a courtesy clerk, I saw under current job step, it says 500.  One, what does that mean, and two, do courtesy clerks get raises?  At orientation, they said they do, but also, actually, when I got hired, my pay was what cashiers start out with and not what courtesy clerks start out with.  So, I am not sure if I am technically a general clerk, so happens to do courtesy clerk things, or what.  I am just confused on the job step thing.

Job step means nothing to you; ignore it.

Now on whether or not you're a courtesy clerk, I'd guess not, once you're making the same as a cashier. Will you get raises? Depends on your contract. Some (like mine) give them a raise(s) but in mine it's only 1 after 2 years.

Oh okay.  I was confused.  The starting rate for cashiers here anyway, is 7.45.  Courtesy Clerks get 7.35.  The day after the question thing, my first official day, I got 7.45.  So, I make the same as a cashier, but looks like I am labeled courtesy clerk, but not based on rate amount, so I don't know.  I will be going on 8 months since I was hired.

By "labelled as a courtesy clerk" do you mean that's what your schedule says? Cuz, and it's not your fault if you misunderstood this, that's just what you're scheduled and has nothing to do with your job class. I'm a FE backup, and I could be scheduled as a CC in eschedule, tho I'd be way overpaid.

That is what they have me as, both on my profile and schedule.  It's just, being that I make the same as a cashier starting off, that means I make more than courtesy clerks, I guess, but again, being I started off with a cashier's rate, or general clerk rate, and not a courtesy clerk's, I am not sure.

Here in Michigan, Cashier, Clerks and Courtesy clerks over 18 start at minimum wage.  Courtesy clerks get a 10 cent raise after 6 months and then never get any other raises.  Cashiers and clerks get raises at 6 months, 1 year, 2,3,4,5,6 years if their hours add upto so many per year.

Don't be confused.  Ask your payroll person what you are.  Then, show the store managers you have what it takes to be a clerk.  Show up on time, answer phone when they call you to work extra, volunteer to stay extra if needed, be a self starter, don't get caught texting on cell phone while clocked in and most important, don't belly ache about being a Kroger employee and having to get carts in the snow, in a Tshirt, up hill and bare foot.  :)

I personally like the Dry Grocery Department.  Dairy and Produce aren't too bad.  Frozen is ok if you can stand the numb fingers.  Most people don't like being cashiers because of snotty customers that make our checks possible but it isn't bad if you are patient and like talking to people.

 You know who else "makes our checks possible"? Other employees. Kroger doesn't view them as customers so some should say "Employee <BagBoy> made this check possible" they have your Name, address, purchase history, ect. I want to see who gave Kroger that money to pay my wages.

Well being in south Texas, I don't really need to worry about the snow.  I do all I can to try to get as close to 40 hours as I can.  Before my store closed, I had 40 hours almost every week, but with the new store, it can be a struggle.  On the phone thing, other people need to know that, because I see a lot of people on it.

That's the problem. 99.9% of emplyees do know that they shouldn't be on their phone on the clock; they just don't care. Set yourself apart by caring enough to make the more professional choice.

For mgmt, however, their personal cell is one of their primary means of contact. Don't ask me why. I didn't make the rules, nor do I think they make complete sense. That's just the way it is.

That would be fine... if it were always strictly business. When you're working alongside a co-manager and you can clearly make out the conversation is "non-work" related and not of a "personal emergency" nature either, then it's abusing the rule, in my opinion. It's not like it's a big issue though in my view and considering some of the other issues I have with Kroger in general, the whole talking on the phone one is really low on my list.

Job step 500 means that you are topped out pay wise for your current position. Some divisions don't give raises to courtesy clerks(or extremely minimal ones) so you're probably in that boat.
