Women can't push carts at night?

I'm a front end supervisor, and was told by management that only men are allowed to push carts after sunset (which is like 5pm now), for "safety" reasons. This sounds ridiculously sexist and inefficient, do y'all know if this is Kroger policy or just the usual management dumbness?

it is management dumbness. file a grievance for preferential treatment.

the only way this should happen is if it is known that there was some danger for them to be doing the job

Correct. I feel like if women don't have to do certain tasks, they can take the pay cut. Especially since quite a few of the women who work here are perfectly capable of cart pushing.

i'm a guy and my answer has nothing to do with being a guy or girl but with things being equal.

equal rights, equal pay, equal work.  ever here of gender equality

Total bull_shi_t.
I cleared lot last night with a female co-worker.
And she had to clear it last week by herself.
10 p.m.

Sounds sexist to me.
Where is your Kroger? Detroit? Maybe Ferguson?
Unless it's in a high crime area where she risks being assaulted, kidnapped, raped or otherwise harassed........it's more Kroger BS.

It's like saying "Women can't work in the meat department because genetically in the human species men are the traditional hunters, and, as such, women aren't as good with cutting implements."

Southeast US, college town. It's a *very* crime-free spot.

We did have one teenage girl who was harassed while pushing carts, but that was during the daytime, and by a (now former) employee.

And nice analogy biggrin

Went to my local Kroger and saw a girl shorter than I am (I'm only 5'3") hauling carts by herself.

So, yes, women CAN push carts at night.

Courtesy clerks make minimum wage so how is it possible to make them take a pay cut?  If management says the female can't go out and get carts then how is it her fault?

Hey, CC's here make minimum wage PLUS up to thirty cents!

But yeah, women can obviously do carts. It's really weird that a store somewhere isn't letting them do so.

we mostly have female baggers. we don't have any male baggers that can close lot (underaged) so i guess it's a different circumstance. we are in a low crime area but 5 mins away is VERY high crime. we have had stalkers on some of our CCs so now certain females can't do lot duty unless someone else is helping them (usually only have one CC at a time outside).

The customers at my store don't like it when our female baggers help them with their groceries or are outside pushing carts(Especially if they are a male customer). Management and our supervisors often tell the male baggers to go push carts and help with groceries and totally ignore the females.

People around here are so sexist.

We have one female in particular that LOVES pushing carts and helping to load groceries. I let her have her way. Customers and management be damned!

Yet they want equal pay written into law. I'm all for equal pay so as long as they're doing equal work.

"They" want equal pay?

Excuse me, but if this is some stupid management idea, then yes it is stupid and sexist of them but please stop with the whole "Oh well if they don't want to work they can take a pay cut" BS. You're sounding like all women are lazy and don't want to work. :(

I'm female and I push carts. I don't see what's so wrong with letting females push carts. It's not the easiest or most enjoyable job in the world, but it needs to be done. What is management gonna do when there are only female CC's working and there's absolutely NO carts? They need to use their common sense.

Origjnal poster here: They simply send out a cashier. Yup.

anyways, I asked around and apparently this policy has been around a while, at least a few years. Made by our former store manager.

Does that mean only men are allowed to shop at night too?  Afterall, if female employees aren't allowed to be out on the lot at night, then female shoppers shouldn't be allowed either.

And it is sexist and probably in violation of the EEOC.

Yeah, it sounds like some major BS. I'd tell your store manager about this. Legally there's no grounds for it and your current store manager ought to have nothing invested in this, since it's basically just one of those "store traditions" that every store has. Those things live on like weird zombie policies unless squashed. (Ours is: You have to go through a service department before becoming a cashier.)

In case nobody has realized it yet, women tend to be attacked or raped more often than men. Managers are just trying to keep their employees safe. Is it *sexist*? Yes, but this policy has a purpose: to reduce the chance of women getting attacked/raped.

That's weird as hell. Most people here see going to a service department as a step up from being on FE.

Same. I would think you have to learn to cashier BEFORE being sent to service department.

It's also against the law.

You'd think, wouldn't you?  Anyway this is clear harassment, it's a violation of law.  Go to the union.

I've had plenty of girls come through my front end who thought it was beneath them to push carts or clean restrooms.  It's part of the job they agreed to.  Don't like it, stop wasting our time and quit!  Others are simply bad ass at the job and move up quickly.  I have noticed, however, it's easier for the girls to move up to being a cashier than the guys.  It smells like harassment to me but it's not my call.

That's some bull****, I know a woman who is no more than 5 feet tall and she pulls them cards like it's nothing, and even does it at night.

Pretty sure that violates the "no sexism" rule there.

It is easier for females to go from CC to Cashier. 100% so. Every female CC that has been hired, that I've seen, has been moved to cashier within the first month of employment. No joke.
