As "greedy" as Kroger appears internally I am very surprised they let employees have Christmas Day off at all.
I truly expected a Scrooge-move by them. I guess for all their dollar-diving they don't want to risk a public backlash for being open on Christmas Day.
Yet Thanksgiving Day was not a problem. Oh well.
The thing everyone should try and remember here is, we all agreed to work holidays and weekends when we filled out our applications at Kroger. I don't believe you can get hired if you don't agree to holidays and weekends. Yes, that message certainly could've been worded more compassionately, but the reality is, a lot of customers want to shop on Christmas Eve (they are the ones fueling corporate's greed) and would shop on Christmas Day too if Kroger was open (and I believe will be, in the future). Not many of us want to work holidays, and in the case of Kroger, some CSMs/management teams will try to make working holidays a little more pleasant by serving free food in the break room or giving out treat bags, but sadly not all care.
My advice is find a Kroger store near you that has better people running the store or seek out a new part time job with a company that you'll be happier with.

Sadly I am unavailable for four wheels at the moment so the next-closest Kroger in our Atlanta market is not an option. We do have a Food Depot here and I am putting in an application tomorrow. The manager knows me so I'm hoping when he has an opening he gives me a call. It's closer to home and will hopefully have a better boss and at least some respect for the employees. Which is one of my biggest issues with this woman; I do not believe she respects us courtesy clerks ( ' baggers ' ) at all. Same for the cashiers, I don't think she gives them much slack either. There is a difference in giving slack and just being a total bi-tch. If you spent a few weeks working underneath this woman you would know which is which. *sigh*
Other than a few grammatical errors, I don't see a problem with any of this...
What do you expect, on one of the busiest days for grocery stores?
He just likes to complain.
My first week was Christmas week last year. First day as a bagger on Christmas eve. It was bell on Earth. But it's a job. Not some hang out with your friends.
If you don't want to work certain days then find a different job or suck it up.

I just love you anons. You're so cute when you're acting like douchebags.
As was stated before when you were hired you agreed to work anytime. I think the CSM is trying to work with everyone even though they have to work she is trying to let them off for family functions at a certain time. Just remember you wont always be at the bottom of seniority next year if you stay you will have more options.
Why even have e-schedule if you're going to do everything by paper? Oh I didn't see your paper?! I think whoever wrote this letter should be reprimanded for not using e-schedule.
But we had the same thing here. It was worded a little better, but basically it said that anything the week before and the week of Christmas would be denied.
Since I got Thanksgiving off, I'm not expecting Christmas Eve off, but I'm REALLY not looking forward to the amount of chicken we're gonna have to fry by 3pm (since deli shuts down at 4).
I don't mind working Christmas Eve. My store closes at 7 and that's when I leave. Plus my family gets together around. 6 ish anyways so it all works out.

Uh, no, many if not most employees are hired with some sort of availability restriction. If your store has the luxury of only hiring ppl with open availabilities, then you seem to have an excess of applicants in your area, which makes you the exception, not the rule.

How is this not using the eschedule? This lady is posting a note telling employees that requests are being denied. This is just a courtesy notice ahead of time. The only thing she's doing outside of eschedule is taking requests for specific shift times; doing it this way is easier than trying to show a couple dozen ppl how to submit one-time availability changes in eschedule.

Sure, the ability to work holidays and weekends is a huge part of being a retail worker. But why does she have to post a message basically saying "Screw you, Kroger owns your soul"? At my store we were able to sign up to work Christmas Eve. No one has to work that day unless they want to.
Personally, I signed up to work on Christmas Eve, but that's because I hate Christmas and don't care about missing it. Plus, when I worked Christmas Eve last year it wasn't that busy. It's the 23rd that you have to watch out for. Only thing I'm not looking forward to are the saccharine customers and their "oh, I'm so sorry you have to work today" crapola. If you were sorry you wouldn't be here ya buffoon!
And also, OP didn't ask for advice.

She didn't "have" to post that message using the wording she did, but some people that are in positions of authority do adopt the kind of attitude that she has. Not saying it's the right way to be, but that's the way she (and I'm sure other people that are either CSMs or in other positions of authority) are. The point is though, while her way of going about wording this announcement is abrasive, she technically isn't in the wrong in any way. On the application, there was a box that you could either check or not check that asked whether or not you could work holidays. If you checked yes, then you can be scheduled to work holidays. If you checked no, then you probably wouldn't get hired.
He didn't ask for advice, but it should be obvious to most by now that he's unhappy with his job and this is yet another instance where he is unhappy with the way she is running the front end at his store. Not all front ends have messages posted that basically read "all requests will be denied" and I would advise any unhappy employee working with someone that creates an unpleasant work environment to look into transferring to another Kroger that has a more positive work environment or see about other jobs in the area that may be run by more compassionate individuals.
Too bad that I will more than likely never have to work Thanksgiving, Christmas, or their corresponding eves ever again due to certain restrictions i have on my schedule. It's a beautiful thing.

Psssh dude, thats easy. I had to work Christmas Eve, Christmas (Today) and also Thanksgiving. And I'll probably work New Years too. Cause my store is open 24/7. The apocalypse could come and theyd still want me to work.
My store is also a 24/7. and as I type this if you worked today on Christmas then your store must have figured out time travel. I could swear it was a Kroger corporate policy to close on Christmas. Ours closed at 7 p.m. last night and re-opens at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.
you guys are tripping yesterday was christmas and I worked from 8am-1:15p. Front end. Store was open from 8 to 5pm. Maybe I should post a copy of my schedule? lol.
