I've been sick with a stomach virus for 3 days now. Today on the third day, I was hoping that I would be able to go in to work but I haven't been able to stay out of the bathroom. I was waiting the whole day until two hours before my shift, which is Kroger policy, to call in. So, I call my manager and tell him I can't come in and he says "So, you just now got this stomach virus? You couldn't have let me know before?"
I told him I was waiting to see if I would be up to coming to work but it turns out I wasn't.
A couple weeks ago this same manager wanted to write me up because I called in after oversleeping for an hour. I ended up getting out of it but he said that next time I should call in at least two hours before. And now when I did he wants to get all snooty about it!
you called in before your shift started and let them know. You did your part. I'm sure that he just let your FES know and they called others to try and replace the shift. I've called in the night before a shift and had the managers tell me to call back later if I wasn't feeling better. It depends on the manager but there isn't anything they can do about it. Your manager just wants you to feel bad, don't.

Two hours may be policy but it's not enough time. IF this was your third day calling out you need a doctor's note.
He or she never said it was their third day calling out. Third day of being ill. Reads like this person had the two days off, prior, already.
You're right, though. 2 hours is not enough time, even if policy. They're gonna be screwed either way, and oftentimes, mgt or department heads don't react quickly enough to staffing issues.
Hell, I've called out a few times with legit illness, and the manager I talked to never even bothered to tell my dept head I wouldn't be in.
Puhleaze!! Manages will complain that you might be feeling better later if you call in too early. Go by the standard. Here they might call somebody, but most times they'll just say "No one will come in". Forget calling another store. Its just pathetic.
Of course of always broke complaining part timers won't stay late or come in early. "If they wanted me to work why didn't they schedule me"?

LOL I love those people. I've got a few cashiers like that. They always bitch for more hours but when offered they have excuses or call out on the extra shift *face palm*.
At this point it's too bad, so sad, you'll get what contract requires and if that's not cutting it, find another job.
Agreed. Even if they can't stay the whole "extra shift" offered, staying for 4-5 hours out of an 8 hr shift is better than nothing at all. I usually try and stay at least 4 hours of an "extra shift" I am offered if I can't stay the entire time. Money is money

I think some people just get used to struggling to get by and sort of enjoy it. The thing I hear is "My bills are paid for the month, and I hate this place". Next month its "Imgonna have to move in with my sister and her boyfriend, we can't afford rent anymore".

It's Kroger. You're lucky to keep the electricity on with what you get paid.
A few weeks back I got so sick that I knew there was no way I was going to be able to go in the next day. I could barely stand up for 5 minutes without getting dizzy. So I called in that night so I wouldn't have to wake up early the next morning to call off two hours ahead of time. The manager said okay and that was that.
...Until the next time I came in and saw "no call no show" written on the day I called off for on the schedule. Luckily I didn't get in trouble for it (the manager I had called got it sorted out) but it's still annoying. And my coworkers thought I didn't call in.
