Nutrition Lead and CAO
Permalink

Hi. I just recently been promoted to Nutrition Lead. Nobody was clear about the pay rate. How much does it pay and do I get that pay automatically or do I have to do something first to earn it? (As of 2015) My confusion is because just recently, nutrition has become part of grocery. It used to be part of produce. In the Union Handbook, it says a level 4 position starts off at $13.75 an hour. I was told that nutrition lead was a level 4 position but its not anywhere in the handbook. Some people say I have to complete training and CBT's to become certified before I get the pay raise. Others tell me I get it right off the bat.  No one seems to know though.

Second Question: Are they going to hire nutrition clerks to help me in this department? There is so much to do in nutrition, especially considering all the things I have to do as lead, not even counting the manager duties such as the CAO stuff and ordering, etc. 8 Hours isnt enough!

Third Question: CAO. Where can I find tutorials on how to use it? Everything I need to know to successfully run a department? I am afraid I am completely by myself in this department and I want to be able to do it successfully and in a timely manner. But I was kind of thrown in there with no clue as of how to do CAO. I know how to do markdowns and scan items out. I tried playing with the system when I worked in my other department. And I am familiar with working items in nutrition to the shelf from that department. But how do I go about learning CAO? I cant ask any managers because they are busy with their own departments.

Sorry for the long post but I just really want to be good at this. I really care about my job. Thanks!

1.

What state are you in?  When did you start at Kroger?  How did you get the lead position?  Here, we have to sign bids.  From your post, it sounds like they just gave it to you.  The person to ask would be your payroll person and then HR.  Here, I think they make regular clerk pay and then get a premium(25-50 cents) based on the amount of sales.  Here, we have to wait 6 months for it to kick in.

2.

That is why you make the extra big bucks.  Kroger is not going to just give extra cash away.  They are going to make you earn it!!  You might get one part time helper if you are lucky.  You will need to figure out how to make your time get used efficiently.  Organized and on top of what needs to be done is the key.  The managers might give you one extra helper at first to help you get on track if you are lucky.  Nutrition going to grocery is new here too.  You might get the help of day grocery clerks.  Maybe Delta Grocery will know.

3.

This is why I asked about how you got the job.  Positions are supposed to be based on "skills and ability".  Working CAO knowledge is a very important skill that you need.  You write well so maybe that skill worked for you to get the job.  You will need to get the Grocery Manager to teach you how to use CAO.  I could write a small book on what I know and still not mention everything needed.  A seasoned Grocery Manager will be the best person to train you.  Hopefully you have a good one to work with.   ISP on the desktop and CAO go together.  You will need to learn how to do an order review, backstock review, etc.

4.

Congratulations and best of luck.

If you have specific questions about CAO, I will try to answer those.

Thank you for replying. I am in Texas. I started working with Kroger December 21st, 2013. I started out in produce, back when nutrition was still apart of produce so I have had my experience working with nutrition. I got the position because they posted flyers in the break room about new positions available so I first talked with my store manager about it then I followed the instructions on the flyer and emailed the coordinator on it. He responded almost immediately. Told me he would talk to my store manager and set up an interview. A few days later he emails me back with the interview date and time. I go to it. Next couple of days I show up at work and apparently everyone in my store knew I got promoted before I did because they were talking about "you leaving us?" and "congratulations". I was confused til my store manager told me I got the job. Today will be my last day at my store. Then I will be at my new one.

There is a CAO tutorial on these forums.

CAO is very extensive, so a grocery manager might not have the time to tell you everything.

There is more than just the RF gun. You gotta know your way around CAO on the computer too, because we have to edit orders first before doing the actual order(I don't know why.. I guess the company wants to keep track of who actually looks at their orders. There's a tracker that tallies how many days you missed editing an order).

I was under the impression we were to edit the order after doing the order review...  I usually let the computer order what it wants and then check to make sure I didn't order 11 cases of menudo.

Doesn't really matter when you do it.   I do mine first to take off unnecessary items , then go out on the floor to add on.
