I work self check and every day my relief is late. I come to work on time so I expect to leave on time. Im not talking 5 mintues but usually anywhere between 10-20 sometimes 30. It drives me crazy because certain days, I have to leave immediately to head to class.
Its not just one, its multiple people that is always late. What can I do to fix this? The managers in my store dont take tardiness seriously, they simply dont care. I think that is why the employees come late because there is no disciplinary action.
On top of that, the supervisor sometimes forget to give me a break so I would go an entire shift without getting one.
At my store the schedule writer never have enough people scheduled for the day so that is why a lot of times i wont get a break because the supervisor is cashiering trying to get the lines down.
Excessive tardiness is something that can and should be dealt with according to policy. I would go to management and explain your issue with school. Also go to your FEM and explain it. If nothing continues to be done, feel free to report the lack of disciplinary measures to higher ups. Explain the steps in which you took to try to rectify the situation by talking to management and that they continued to not take it seriously. This will lead at least to a phone call that should set them straight and action should be taken at that point. If not, well it would just get worse for them.

When it is time to go home, give your handheld to your supervisor and say I'm out of here. As far as getting your break, start bugging someone every 5 minutes until you get one. No one can take advantage of you without your permission.
If you've seen the daily schedule sheet for the front end (at least in my store), you would know why you sometimes get a late break. The self check out part of the page is down at the very bottom and easy to forget. I would call your supervisor when it is your break time. They might still tell you to wait, but at least then you know they didn't forget and if you end up not getting a break, that will help you if you go to the union.
I've had this argument too many times to count. I don't know when this idea started becoming popular, but the concept of 'your relief' doesn't apply here, that's for emergency room nurses and such.
FEM finally leaves me alone and I leave on time to the minute.

ours is like that too. but luckily when i'm on self check out my supervisors are pretty good about giving breaks/lunch. i actually get them on time when i'm on self check out rather than when i'm cashiering or bagging.
like others said i would give your supervisor your handheld. they cannot make you stay past your schedule without your ok. maybe if you keep doing that they will finally get onto the late person

All employees, take note of what this person is saying here: "No one can take advantage of you without your permission." Those salaried managers like to use this passive-aggressive attitude, and "forget" about stuff like breaks. No, they don't forget. They assume you'll give up if they avoid you a time or two. It's totally intentional.
I once had a supervisor refuse me a break. I asked her if I could go ahead and take my break soon and she said "no, I won't be able to give you a break tonight." I went straight to the phone and paged the manager on duty that night and he came over and told the supervisor she had to let me go on break now.
Half of our trained SCO associates at my store are high school students, so they can't come in to work until around 4:00pm and our SCO opening shift is 7am to 3pm so the person opening just gives her handheld to the floor supervisor or customer service and leaves.
When I closed SCO (3pm to 11pm here) we had a girl who worked overnight (11pm to 7am) and she would call out A LOT. She did it once when I was closing and it was a school night too. The floor supervisor and I just shut down the self checkout, called over the night manager and put up a CLOSED sign on our main entrance doors until our front end department manager could make it here to open up SCO overnight. I went home.
