Hi all. New to the forum, and Kroger. I just got hired in last weekend. I'm working front end, and it's fine so far. But I'm no stranger to retail so I know there is bound to be all sorts of things that are going to be not so great. I was just wondering if any of you had any advice for me about Kroger or front end @ Kroger. Or more specifically, if there's anything I should know about this company's inner workings. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
It sucks here. It will be OK for the first few months, but after awhile you will really grow to hate this place. I've worked in two other retail stores, and both were much better than the experience I have had at Kroger. Somehow Kroger manages to be more dehumanizing than other stores. I'm applying at new places as we speak.
Managers don't care about you, are usually stressed and take it out on you. If your store is like mine, you don't really have any opportunities to socialize with coworkers -- even on break -- and no one tries to get to know you. It's a get in, work, and leave environment. You end your shift with sore feet/low back (if you're on front end, which I am as well).
-Be familiar with the rules, starting with but not limited to the employee handbook for your division.
-Be familiar with the union contract for your division, as it tells you your rights. They'll be legally required to provide you with a copy.
-Work hard, do what you're asked, be punctual, learn who has real authority and stay on their good side (but please, FFS, no brown-nosing)
-If you get trained on the register, PAY ATTENTION. This goes for after your training as well.

i have the opposite experience than you. our managers really back us up and i consider some of my co workers like family. i work front end and we socialize together with the customers and generally very friendly to each other. i try to get to know people from other departments though.
ive worked here for more than a year and only started to dislike it cause the pay is nothing considering target and walmart went up on their pay rate.
I've been wit the company for nearly 8 months and I am literally a mere shadow of who I was before Kroger. Yes, I did come home tired, but I come home 10 times more tired and miserable than any other job in the same field I've been in. Granted, I'm also an anxiety sufferer, and crowds happen to be a trigger, but nothing I can do but to work through it (which is very exhausting in and of itself).
I recently got another job. It's in retail, but the HUGE difference is that I'm in the back where the only human interaction I have is with my co-workers, and thus far, they make me feel more like part of a family than Kroger does (even though they pride themselves on a family-like environment; dunno about you, but I think family shouldn't want to kill each other on a regular basis).
However, don't let the thoughts of us disgruntled old folks get to you. Mileage may vary.

Well I've been working the front end as a courtesy clerk for a couple weeks now, and I already get at least 27 hours a week on average.. The first week I got 38.... I got a positive comment from a customer my first day, and another one a couple days ago. I like most of the people I work with. They're all very nice. And our management is great. The only thing I'm confused about is that my first check from a full week was about forty dollars short of what it should have been... I was told Sunday hours work differently. But not exactly how it works. So do I get the pay for my Sunday hours of last week on next weeks check or what? And to those of you who say Kroger is horrible, try working at walmart. It will make you love your job, I promise you.
I lose around $40 due to the federal and state taxes with social security.
That figure also includes $7 per paycheck for the union.
And, although I regret it (only a slight bit...) I also lose $1 for charity donation as well.
