New Worker At Kroger
Permalink

Ok so, it's my 2nd day on working at the Deli, and it was just me and this other girl, she worked there for a while, so I figured she knows what to do. It's 10pm, and we have to leave, but there are 3 slicers that aren't clean yet, I asked her, "what do we do with them? Do we just stay a little longer to clean them?" She told me, "it's 10 we have to go, just wipe the crumbs off." I did and then I left, I know that we should clean the slicers to avoid food poisoning and such, but will we or I get in trouble?

Yes, someone should get in trouble.  You didn't know any better since it is your second day.  The other employee should know better than that.

The reason for Deli closers is to make sure the space and equipment is clean for the people that open in the morning.

I do not know the routine for the Deli.  There are other posters that will be able to advise you better on the topic.

Thanks, it's been bothering me since I left. I'm afraid to go back to work and see her or I get in trouble. I don't want her to get in trouble, I don't mind taking the blame, since she has been there longer and I just started.

Don't take the blame for her.  You didn't know any better and she should have.  Remember that you're on your probation period, which means that even something small like taking the blame could send you packing.  I mean yes, I see the logic that maybe since you didn't know any better, the punishment will be less severe, but they'll probably look into the situation anyway to see who was closing with you.  These things have a way of being found out about.

I work in a store where there are several employees that have given up and cut corners like that all the time.  It's important not to listen to them as they'll try to tell you its ok to cut corners.  Its not.  Opening shift will come in, probably bitch about the dirty slicers, and they'll see who worked closing.  I'm not trying to scare you or be mean, just that if you're serious about working at Kroger in the deli, don't always assume that your more experienced coworkers know better.  Because even if they do, they might skip it anyway because they think they can get away with it.  Just be careful.

I would be on the phone paging the store manager or comanager.  Tell them it's time for you to leave, you need help with the closing duties and ask for checklist of closing duties and someone to show you how.

The store may not be allowing overtime.  In that case ya got to run.  Also a lot of people just won't stay over.  As a closer you have to expect it.  Sometimes the senior employees will leave a mess and then point to the newbie.  Don't take the blame.  You did what you were told.

Yeah, I had something happen to me my first week in the deli where the person I closed with did a **** job on the floors, then tried to pin blame on me.

Needless to say, it didn't work.

You'll be in the clear. She won't. She knows better. Don't take the blame because if she is vindictive (and there's a chance that she is; the deli will do that to you), she will do it repeatedly until you get fired. Cover your own ass.

In other news, I work in a store where 2 closers is the norm. We manage to get out no later than 10, unless we are really busy. If your deli closes at 9, there should be only 3-4 things that need to be done: the last meat slicer, floors/drains, PPST's (the last batch of them gets done at 9pm, to scan out the last chicken losses), and some minimum dishes. You're new, so you're gonna be a little slow at first. This person should've directed you to start the cleaning duties a lot sooner. Next time, just initiate it.

I know that if it's my time, it's my time. I just can't stay more than 15 minutes over.
