written up for closing fuel center early?

So the fuel center closes at 11:00, when the pumps shut down, but the lights shut off at 11:57 and that's when I hit "end shift" and started counting up my till. A customer came up at 11:58 wanting gas, but I was already closed and had to decline. Now she called the store manager and he says that I'm being written up because the fuel pumps were technically still operational and that I was in the wrong.

I have no problem with getting written up for that, since I'll just take it as a learning experience and I've been in the fuel center for the past 6 months.

Will my first write up be a suspension, or just kind of like a warning and if it happens again I'll get the boot?

Typical customers, they just have to go cry to the manager when they don't get their way.

Usually write-ups are warnings which then lead to suspension if you get more of them and then termination later if you get more. Some write-ups are immediate suspension if you, for example, no-call no-show. If you are under a union, see if you can file a grievance and get the write-up nulled. They should not write you up because of one minor customer complaint.

When I pull up to a gas station that's closing... I FIND ANOTHER ONE. This isn't the 19th century. We have plenty of gas stations and prices are incredibly low right now. So why should I waste time bltching to a store manager? These complanitive people have plenty of time to spend because... Nobody else wants to be around them. They usually have dead-end jobs, a dysfunctional family, and are anti-social. So be happy. Be happy you aren't THEM.

i don't know anything but the fuel center but are you scheduled till 11?

if so tell them, well okay, i'll just leave at 11 then and leave everything still going since legally, you can't keep me past my schedule time.

that will shut them up

I think that should only be a verbal warning with directions on how you are to properly handle the situation since you didn't know ..  But, with the Make It Right policy, you never know.

Generally, the write-ups go in stages.  Warning, 2nd warning, Last warning, then fired.  Unless you are on probation and call in too much or are caught stealing product or time.

If you are union, ask your shop steward to go into meeting with you.  Refuse to sign and grieve the write-up thru the union.

I work in the Fuel Center. I'm always scheduled to close at 11:15. Our pumps stay on for customers to pay with a card at the pump, but at 11 I close my till and the pumps shut off for me to be able to have someone pre pay with cash. I've had to turn away quite a few people after it hit 11:10. I've even had people complain, but I personally never got in trouble because at 11 I'm supposed to be closed. The fifteen extra minutes is to close everything and make sure I count down my till and whatnot. I'm not sure why you're having to stay till midnight.. That seems a little odd, but nevertheless it's Kroger.

At our store if we get three write ups then we're fired.

This is why we lock the doors 5-10 mins early. Stupid people want to come in and shop for an hour after we close for no other reason than they can't find anyone else to annoy at midnight.

Closers have lives too and just want to go home at their scheduled time. Screw late night / last minute customers.

Yes! I honestly think half of the world thinks that people who work in retail are secret super heroes or something.

'You only have a minute before you have to close? Let me look at all your scratch off options and all your drinks and THEN spend fifteen minutes searching my wallet and/or bag for the money. Too bad if you're late and clock out with overtime; I'm the customer!'

xD Oops. Maybe I should have clarified that. Everyone here in Indiana calls them scratch offs. (Since technically that's what it is) xD
