Kroger bakery/deli position
Permalink

My orientation is today & I am super nervous! It's my first time working in a grocery store. I thought working in a bakery/deli would be easy since I'm in one area most of the time & don't mind all the cleaning. Any thoughts, tips, or advice??

Really?  I've worked in the bakery department for over 20 years and I've never had the need to drink a lot of water.  You must work in a pretty confined space where the heat from the ovens and fryers has nowhere to go.

also you go over a lot of stuff in the training like how to cook chicken and stuff but they most likely will not have you doing that right off the bat.

Do you know what time of the day you'll be working?  At my store, if you come in late morning or midafternoon, you usually bake cookies and pies.  If you come in late afternoon or early evening, you usually package cookies and pies and do the cleaning.  The first bread baker comes in at 4:00 AM.  The second one comes in at 6:00 AM.  The cake decorator comes in around 8:00 AM.

I thought it'd be fun too...it gets boring after a while just doing the same stuff, especially if you're doing the same shifts (which you probably will be closing for a long time).

I second drink lots of water if you're on deli side. Especially with the warmer months coming. It does get very warm back there. Hide if you must, since apparently a human right is a violation of health safety codes.

I would love to have help in the bakery. I am the baker and I go in at 5 a.m. The person that sets the floor comes in at 6 and then it's just the two of us all day. I bake all my bread, pies and donuts, package and put all of my bake out and then have to do my slack out. Then I get to bring truck up, do markdowns and do any cake orders that we have for the day since there is only me and one other person that knows how to do cakes. And if I have time I get to start baking cookies. Talk about being exhausted by the end of my shift.

At my store, I notice a lack of bakery workers too.  The closer (yes, closer, there's only 1 there) gets stuck with the breakout and cleaning up whatever mess the day shift leaves.  It's a good thing that our bakery isn't super busy so they get out on time, but still.

I keep telling them they need to find another cake decorator since there is only me and one other person.  When the other girl is off on a Saturday I have to do bake and cake orders. Last Saturday I had to bake and then had 20 cake orders to do in my shift and then they wonder why I'm in a bad mood most of the day. I was told there would not be another cake decorator as there is no one to train and when they hire people they train them in the deli first and we never see them especially when they usually quit after a month or so. We usually only have 1 closer in bakery too that is by themselves after 4 p.m most days.

They need to hire for those two departments period. Deli especially is a rough department to be in because of how much is involved. We would have things left undone for days because there just isn't enough coverage for it, and even if there was, no one trains those who are there to do a good chunk of the jobs.

I've been there 9 months, and I've never been trained to do replenishment reports. A guy has been there for 8 months, he recently just learned how to package cold to go.

Especially for those high volume seasons (grad season anyone), there should be more than just 1 person closing in the bakery.

I work in the deli and it's not so much difficult as it is extremely tedious and boring. Most of your time will be spent working on the counter. You'll probably be working alone a lot of the time because people don't like waiting on customers and do everything in their power to get off the counter...but I can't say I blame them. Waiting on customers is so tiring and miserable that people in my department fight over taking the cardboard to the compactor so they can get 5 minutes away from the deli area.

Funny story--at our store, we volunteer to take whole chickens to the U-Scan coop, and walk s l o w l y just so we don't have to go back on the counter.

As of late, I've been on cold-to-go/counter duty, and cold-to-go never gets done because I'm stuck on counter since no one is to be found when there is a customer.  Sometimes I just hide in the bathroom for 5 minutes.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it goes in my store too. Sometimes the department head puts me on sandwich/wrap/salad duty when we have enough people (like 4 other people besides me) and yet somehow I always end up having to wait on customers for long stretches of time because everyone else disappears. I'm lucky if I can get anything finished within 8 hours.

So, I know this is late but I can't resist the urge to give you my opinion on that position.

Yeah.. our store is big so Bakery and Deli are separated. Honestly, I hate the Deli. I didn't start hating my job until I was put in charge during closing.. with only two other new people (We have three ovens, four slicers, three fryers, and a Salad/Olive station). I ended up hiding in the cooler for five minutes trying not to have an anxiety attack and trying to get rid of my headache.

It really sucks now that we close the Deli at 10pm and are expected to leave right after we close so we have to deal with customers and trying to get everything shut down and cleaned. Lemme tell ya, that isn't easy with two other new people, me being pretty new myself (I think I had been there for five or six months the first time I was put in charge due to all the older night people quitting). I pretty much have to tell them what to do or they just stand around looking lost and I have to remind them what to do while trying to get all my stuff done. I envy our Bakery which is right next to us. They only have one closer at night (maybe two if it's supposed to be a busy day) and they are always done an hour early..

Honestly, it depends on how big the store is and the turnover rate. Right now I'm trying to switch over to the smaller store in our area because I'm tired of getting stressed over trying to get everything done. The smaller store is much slower and only has one slicer and I think one or two fryers and no bars to clean so yay.

Also, if it's anything like our store as a new person you'll probably be stuck on the counter, cleaning the windows and cleaning the slicers for a long time... I only got off those when we got more new people lol. Then I started to learn more things and suddenly I'm usually in charge of nights... I only have two other coworkers who sometimes work nights with me that can take over as the person in charge which are my favorite days.

I kinda want an update on how Anon is doing :).
