So basically I'll just tell you the situation and then ask my question..

I work in the FC. Our 'team' consists of four people. Now that wouldn't be an issue, but one of my coworkers constantly calls in for stupid reasons and usually gets away with it. Well they called in this past Thursday even though everyone had seen this person earlier in the day picking up their check. I was called and asked to come in. I said okay (I haven't declined since I started almost a year ago and I've never called in) and came in for their shift.

Well the next day comes around and I come in for my shift to relieve them and they told me what happened with the managers over her/him calling in. Basically this person called in within an hour of their shift. According to her/him, he/she got a write up and put on probation for everything and they are walking on thin ice. But they told me that they lied to the managers about why he/she couldn't come in. The coworker then told me the real reason, which was a stupid reason. It wasn't life threatening or in any way an emergency.

My manager keeps questioning me if this particular coworker has said anything to me about what happened to cause them to not be able to come in. Should I tell my manager the truth, or keep quiet and let it go? The coworker asked me to keep it a secret.

At this point, I wouldn't say anything unless this other employee starts screwing with you.

The honest person in me probably would've said something, only because if it's a habitual thing, it needs to be addressed.

The right thing to do is to just say nothing, and have the co-worker tell on themselves. Thing with lying? You tell one, you need 21 more.

This.  You don't have to say anything, but should that person ever screw you over, I'd play that card.  Keep in mind that you are not there to make friends, you're there to earn money, so if you feel the need to throw this guy under the bus, so be it.  You might tell your manager/supervisor what happened, in private.  Just so they are aware.

At this point it doesn't really matter why they called in.  They have been written up and put on probation.  Nothing else can be done, no matter what the reason.  I wouldn't say a word.  I don't trust people like that.  If you say anything then you have to worry about them getting fired and coming back and keying your car or something because they think it's all your fault.  Plus they could possibly start lying about you.  I'd watch myself around this one.

Your manager keeps questioning you?  How many times?  Tell the manager if he wants to know why this employee didn't come in then talk to the employee.  Tell him you DO NOT want to be involved, as it has nothing to do with you.   Tell him all you know is you were called in to cover their shift, you worked it, done deal.

Yeah I'm just gotta mind my own business. Plus it builds a little bit of friendship in this workplace so might as well. Thankfully I don't have a car so that's a plus.
