Calling in to cancel shift?

I have a shift tomorrow morning from 645 am to noon, which shouldn't be bad, but on the my availability I specifically put I couldn't work Thursdays and am unable to do so tomorrow. I'm still on my probationary period and need to call them but am afraid of being fired. When I call, I press 0 to talk to customer service and then what should I say? Sorry for all the questions, first job and first time not being able to make a shift.

Ask to speak to the manager on duty and explain why you won't be at work and that you are unavailable in the AM and on Thursday.  When was your schedule for the week posted?  Ours are usually posted by noon on Friday.  I'm just curious why you have waited until the last minute to notify them unless the schedule was just posted on Tuesday?  They can fire you over this since you are on probation.  If you really like your job I would go into the store and ask some other employees to cover your shift for you.  Many may want more hours.  In the future, if you still have one with Kroger, I wouldn't wait until the last minute.  (If you in fact did)

Did you get the time off or did you request it?

There is no real way of saying "I can't work these days and/or times".  You can go into your availability and request days/times off, but those are only requests.

If you frequently call off for reasons like this, you will be fired.  They don't care that you requested it.  If this is going to be a frequent issue, I would suggest looking for another job right away.  Some department heads are good about following avaliability, most aren't.  Yours probably isn't.  I'd guess that you will run into this issue just about every single week.

Have you tried putting yourself as unavailable on Thursdays? If you have, and they violated it, then you need to let em know, especially if it's for school purposes. Kroger ain't worth missing class over.
