If a relative (say a paranoid mom who believes you've been skivving off work because someone else said you were) goes in demanding to know if/when you've called in, is it even legal for Management to give that sort of information out? I got a pal having a bad freak out cos their mom has threatened to do this. Admittedly, they HAVE called in a handful times, mostly due to illness but a couple of times were cause of severe anxiety attacks (their ma certainly isn't helping on this front). This is their first job so they're doing their best at going in when they can (even going in when called on their days off), and working the hours given to them without complaint, but now they're now super afraid that their ma could jeopardize **** and get them fired.
No, they're above the age of 18. They still live at home for reasons, mostly the elderly mother but she's pretty strict/controlling of them. Always has been.
I don't think there is a policy stating what should be done in these situations. Normally you'd hope that your manager would respect your privacy but i have a feeling more than not the person being asked would answer honestly not knowing what could happen.
In an ideal world, no, they shouldn't say anything but it depends on the person and how privacy minded they are.

I've had moms call to check up on their kids, find out if "they got to work OK" or not even if 18+.
It seems legit once in awhile especially if the weather is bad but if they're calling every shift or asking if their child was scheduled they look C-R-A-Z-Y.
