I just got hired at Kroger Last Monday. I'm a courtesy clerk.

Hi, everyone. I just got hired as a courtesy clerk on Monday. My first day was Thursday and my Orientation is Tuesday. I live in Central GA and I was hired by the ATL Division. I finished part one of my computer training, and now I have to finish part two next week. I won't be put on the floor until I finish it. I've worked eight hours so far.

Can anyone give me any tips? I don't know anything. I still haven't been given by shoppers discount card, uniform, or name tag. How do I set up direct deposit? I'm just so nervous. They haven't even thumb printed me so I can clock in yet.

I'm really nervous. I have an associates degree in business administration technology so I hope that I can job advance later on.

You don't just get a discount card. You have to ask for one and ask for them to put the employee discount on it. It takes several weeks for the employee discount to show up after you ask for it.

You will be given a uniform and name tag before you start on the floor.

Once you are given a username, you can log in to ess.kroger.com to set up direct deposit. Otherwise, your check will be at the customer service desk and you have to ask for it each week. I think it takes a few weeks for direct deposit to actually start (so you'll have physical checks until then), but I don't remember.

Calm down, man. You're just going to be bagging, cleaning, pushing carts, etc. It can be strenuous work, but you'll be fine. It's not rocket surgery...Kroger just needs anyone with a pulse. Why are you so nervous anyway? Is it your first job or something?

Given that...if you have a B.A., why in the world are you working at Kroger??? If you're just doing it while applying for relevant jobs, then I understand. But don't make this your thing. This isn't the place where you can move up quickly, if at all. PLEASE apply to other places for your own sanity!

Try not to make management dislike you. Try your best not to call in for the first two months. Make awkward small talk with your other coworkers.. If something is unfair, tell management ASAP. Don't let people tell you what to do if it's out of your comfort zone. Also on top of that always make the customers happy (even if they don't deserve it)! Anyways good luck! It isn't the hardest job and it might cause some stress but you should be fine.

Rocket surgery?  Since when do you perform surgery on rockets?  It's rocket science.

Rocket surgery combines all of the difficulties of rocket science with all of the difficulties of brain surgery.

Rocket surgery?

It's almost as if he said it that way to be amusing.  What a concept.

Humor: it needn't be rocket surgery.

I imagined a rocket with a brain attached where the warhead should be and this guy with a scalpel hoovering over it.

Rockets are suicidal.

Hey, welcome to the team. I'm another college grad working courtesy clerk (CC). I started right after undergrad and CC allows me to have the flexibility to do grad school. You'll get some people that wonder if you're mentally handicapped sometimes, but it's not too bad. If you're trying to get experience for business though, not sure that Kroger is the best fit for you. If you do well, you can move up and typically get to customer care in under two years, but it's typically a pain in the butt. But maybe you're at one of the rare stores where management gives a care about their employees.

As for being a CC, smile and be friendly to customers. Don't make the cashier's mad because they can make your life hell. If you get stuck with a rude cashier who the customers are complaining about, be as smiling and customer friendly as possible so management doesn't think you were being rude as well.

Find out if your store has a difference between CC's and Utility clerks. Some do and some don't. If they don't, be ready to clean bathrooms, registers, and everything else in the store.

If you're at a large store, you're going to work longer hours. We just had several people move to our MarketPlace from the basic Krogers and they are getting into trouble for complaining at working 8 hour shifts because their store only had them working 4 hour shifts.

If you are quiet and introverted and can manage to come in on time, work in the mornings. Management has trouble filling those spots during the school year and you get bonus points for being there in the mornings doing the go-backs and cleaning. Also, fewer customers typically. Nights are also hard to fill sometimes because if the store is in a college town, the college students work during the hours of high school, and high school students take over around 5PM, but they aren't supposed to work after 10pm or something like that. Midnight shifts can be hard if the people before you didn't clear lot very well, at my store it has to be clear or we're not to leave. Also find out if you're store schedules their CC's for half hour lot or full hour. We have full hour lot shifts, and whenever we get transfers from stores with half hour lot stores, we get a ton of whining. Lot isn't that bad even at large stores.

Anyways, hope you're first few days on floor work out well. Find out if the person you shadow that first day is someone competent, or if they're the only one that train you because they have the right shift.

Best of luck!!
