So I work overnight as a grocery stocker. This week I was only scheduled 20 hours. Before I left work Monday when my shift was done, my schedule read as follows:

Sun - 2:30am - 8am

Mon - 2:30am - 8am

Tues - off

Wed - off

Thur - off

Fri - 2:30am - 8am

Sat - 2:30am - 8am

I head to work Friday (today) and get there early... ehh, around 2am-ish. My store isn't a 24 hour store, so the frozen clerk opened the door to let me in. The frozen clerk immediately tells me that the grocery lead wants to talk to me. So I go to him to see what he wants. Mind you, it's not 2:30am yet so I didn't clock in. He tells me that I was supposed to be there at 12am that night, and that it even says so on the schedule. I'm all like "wtf? It does not. Here, I'll show you a picture of the schedule that I took with my smartphone". And he's all like "follow me".

So we go to the schedule, and I see that someone wrote in 12am where my slot is. Then he has the nerve to tell me he assumed someone told me to come in today at 12am, and that it's my responsibility to keep track. Mind you, this stupid idiot has my cellphone number. And you'd think that as the night lead, he'd keep his night stockers informed of time changes. Especially those stockers WHO WERE OFF WHEN THE SCHEDULE GETS CHANGED AND HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WAS CHANGED!

Then he sent me home and says to me how he can't afford the hours. And how he already has someone coming in at 4am tonight to take my place for the night. The other stocker that he has coming in already worked 5 days this week. But the lead has him coming on his day off. Yet the lead tells me he can't "afford" anymore hours!? I ask you dear forum, how in the F**K was this even fair or justifiable? No one communicates to me when the schedule changes up on my days off, yet I'm 'supposed' to know?!? I totally got robbed of what little hours I was given this week, and I'm frustrated as SH*T right now on the count of this stupid idiot night lead. He's only been with us since the 23rd of August, but he's been a pain in our ass ever SINCE. What am I supposed to do about this? I barely get hours, and I lose what little friggin hours I have man.

Contact your union folks with an eye toward filing a grievance for pay for the hours you were cheated.

The Local 1000 contract, for example, requires 24 hours' notice for any change to a part-timer's schedule.

Isn't it funny......seems like it's so hard for union memebers to get hold of their union.

But the union knows DAMN WELL where to find the member's money.

Is that the first time the schedule has been changed like that?

Common decency would be for someone to call you and let you know the schedule had been changed.

I would file a grievance for the 6 hours you were not allowed to work.  Most contracts say the schedule needs to be posted by Friday at noon.  Any changes need to be done by Noon Saturday.   Your contract may be different.  Usually a notice of changes is posted by the time clock.  You were there Sun and Mon so someone should have said something to you.  But, from now on, I would make another picture on Sunday.

You can't trust Eschedule.  I have never seen an update on Eschedule that shows changes.

Sounds like he was too eager to call the other guy in instead of calling you to find out where you were.

Ask your Union steward if you can grieve it.  You have to be off probation.  You might need to be a member of the union.  Unfortunately, it may piss the night lead off but could also put him in his place so it doesn't happen again in the future.

Off topic:

What aisles do you normally work?

Talk to your store manager ASAP. NOT your grocery lead, but the manager.
Show him/her a pic of the orginal schedule on your phone and show the unauthorized change.
Show a section of your contract stating that there MUST be AT LEAST 24 hours to ASK if try can change it on you (if there is one).
Explain calmly that you were not called not notified.
If the manager is understanding they will give you your hours back and talk to your grocery lead. Expect retaliation. Especially if this guy is a major dick.
If nothing happens get ahold of your union. Expect backlash.

Hope this helps good luck

Anonymouse1, my past grocery manager would always group text us ahead of time whenever she penned in sudden changes to the schedule. So this wasn't the first time the schedule has been suddenly changed like that. Ever since there was an overhaul of department changes at my store at the beginning of the year, we've gotten a new grocery manager and night lead who obviously operate differently from our old staff.

Anyway, my store director ended up calling ME earlier today and apologizing for the stupid idiot night lead's mishap. He granted me pay for the hours missed and said he was gonna have a word with the night lead. So all is well for now. Thanks for your time.

That's very good.  He, essentially, to the extent possible, made it right.

The union is essentially the employees  who pay their dues. It is also part of their duty to find this information out and who is the store's shop steward(s). What is your local or what store do you work at so I may try and find this information? You may pm me and i'll do the best I can to help you. The hours he sent you home will be paid to you since the schedule was already written. Changes can't be made to the schedule after a certain time of the week.

schedule shall be posted by friday at noon....yeah that never happens.  If I file a grievance about it, nothing will happen.  Why doesn't my store get penalized some how for not following the rules.  I know I would be penalized if I went against what the contract stated!

Contract says ten hours between shifts but I'm often scheduled eight hours or fewer. It's bs but there's no recourse. Just like schedule saying no split shifts and being forced to work them.
