Anyone here have experience with taking a leave of absence/drastically reducing availability?

As a junior in uni in a STEM major, I don't really have the time or energy to spend 30 hours a week tooling around at Kroger and getting yelled at by dickhead managers and entitled customers. I'm thinking about putting in a leave of absence -- anyone have experience with doing this? I'm going to talk to my HR person during my next shift to see what options I have. Maybe I could handle one or two easy 4-hour shifts per week, but nothing more than that.

Ever since my old CSM left I feel like people have gotten a lot crabbier and my work environment isn't a place I want to be 20-30 hours a week. I felt like I was cozy and buddy-buddy with everyone for awhile, now I feel like I hate my supervisors and some of my coworkers. Especially since one of the guys I hate the most is now being promoted to floor supervisor, I really can't handle being in that terrible place more than a bare minimum...

Pardon my negativity, I got in an argument with my supervisor today and it was just an awful Sunday. So, does anyone have experience with something like this?

I could be wrong, but I think the best you could do would be change your availability to reflect those shifts you want. L.O.A. means you're gone completely for a specific amount of time, you typically can't mix them.

Why can't you just find another job?  Kroger can't be the only business in your city.

Anon I feel like you missed where I said that my schoolwork takes most of my time. Lol. Like yeah I could find another job, but first of all Kroger pays me really well and the benefits are excellent and I have seniority. I really don't have a reason to quit, it's just not possible for me to be working more than 15 hours right now.

Talk to HR?

In my area (Southwest, D12), that department seems to regard itself defenders of management/executioners of associates.

Read your contract, man.  There will likely be a paragraph or more on leaves of absence.  Armed with that knowledge, you'll be better prepared to deal with the Evil Ones.

No, I didn't miss it.  Just thinking you could work part time somewhere else that might work out better for you.  Good luck to you, just make sure you put school first!

if you take an academic LOA you lose your health insurance during the leave (unless you're on your parents plan in which case never mind)

i know quite a few students who've taken a leave during a semester and come back in the summer - hell, one guy even came back for his fall break and worked that week!

talk to your HR person first, they'll get you the necessary paperwork but they will definitely try to convince you to drop your hours first. last fall, this high school kid worked only on saturday and sunday. you might have to sign a waiver to drop your minimum hours.

you know what'll work best for you.
