Generally if the customer insists on giving you one, then you can accept. By insisting I mean they offered and you said no and they wouldn't take no for an answer.
We were told by a manager not to accept them, but since the customer is ALWAYS right, that you should take them. I got $10 from a guy with four carts full of stuff before.
