How much does the union take from your pay check and should I join it?

I just got hired at Ralph's as a courtesy clerk and I have my orientation soon. Can some one please explain how much money the union takes and if it's worth to join. I'm only 16 and I don't plan on working here for more then 2 years.

Welcome to the Kroger Company,

The union normally takes ~$8-10 per week. Sometimes less sometimes more, it depends on the contract for your local. I do not know if you are in a right to work state. In any case, If you don't plan on staying here very long then you would be better off not joining the union.

For the first 45 days you will not be in the union, regardless, as that is your probationary period. After the probation is over there is normally an initiation fee in addition to your normal payment to the union for the next 3 months and it can be quite a bit extra, like $10-15 per week more, it really sucks. Work as hard as you can, come in if you get called, make friends with your managers and supervisors, and try to make your co-workers like being around you so that you'll be able to keep the job and not be let go before your probation is over.

I would highly recommend joining the union if you plan to stay longer than a year, but it's up to you.

After your orientation, Don't sign anything but your pay check.

P.S. Welcome to the forums, as well.

No it is not worth it for your position...if you get fired, you go find a better paying job easily. This isn't a 1950s auto union job, its bagging groceries.

don't join just yet, if you make it 5 yrs, then maybe very slightly joining it. i regret joining it.. nothing to show for my 3 yrs in it, no better shifts, pay, and actually reduction of benefits people in older contracts get to continue to enjoy. i am paying for them, not me now.. by the time i get their age it will be worthless to me and damn near pointless to anyone under me.

I heard from another thread that you still have to pay the union some money even if you don't join. Also can I join the union later if I change my mind

where i same, we have a right/will to work law in place, meaning the union can't force you to pay dues. as to when you can join, don't see why you can't join later if you like. but getting out is a bitch.. imo, it should be as easy to leave as it is to join. seems a scam to me to have to wait two weeks to anniversary of join time and send some certified papers in saying you want out and hope they don't claim they didn't get it in time.. bloody scam.

You shouldn't have to pay anything if you choose not to join.

yes, you can, leave later if you wish. It has certain stipulations attached though.

believe it or not, there are states that require you pay a union if your company has one. it's the law. a bull**** law, bu the law. look it up. perhaps the poster lives in one of them unfortunate states?
