I'm a full time employee that has been working for Kroger for 15 years in Atlanta division been trying get a transfer to another store closer to where my fiancé lives without any luck and into a store position, hope to get married next year. All I get from the store managers is that we don't have full time position available at this time but they sure can have a sign on the door now hiring seem weird that they cannot take a existing employees and transfer them to that store that needs the help so bad. It seems not right how kroger treats there old time employees like crap.
They are probably hiring for courtesy clerks and cashiers, part time only. They probably do not have any full time positions open and aren't hiring for full time or accepting transfers.
This is common in retail. Hate to tell you this, and I hope I'm wrong, and by all means keep trying, but you might wanna count on staying put. Long time employees are typically grandfathered in on every detail: store, FT status, benefits, etc. Sucks, but be glad you have what you do.
Here, each store is only allowed to have so many full time employees per sales. Occasionally, they post bids and full time employees can transfer that way. Here, you would have to wait for someone to keel over, retire or get fired for a spot to open. Not sure how it works there or how your contract deals with it.
It is true that stores only have so many full time slots open. I had exactly the opposite problem when wanting a transfer. I found a store that would take me, but my old store would not let me leave for the longest time. I wanted to work closer to home, and was told by the store manager, "Where you live is not my problem. We need you here.". Then I was told we needed to hire more people for my department(deli) first, yet we had people on the bottom of the schedule with no hours. The union was no help, I was told "the union does not get involved with transfers. We cannot make the manager let you leave". After I kept nagging, I was eventually transferred, but it took a while and a lot of nagging on my part.

This is common. We have a guy who is full time and bought a house about 50 minutes away, there a host of stores that are closer but none have any full time positions open.
