Just work the bare minimum. No need to bust your ass.

I've been working 48 hours for over month now because we are shorthanded.

It's getting pretty bad everywhere, we have one person in my department quitting next week and another who's due to go out on maternity leave at any moment. I'm sure there's going to be plenty of OT for the remaining 4 of us in the future.

Yet another example of just how backwards this company is.

Is it truly cheaper to pay out all this overtime than to actually properly staff the stores? Even if it is the cheaper option, it certainly isn't the best option for the employees or the customers. Overtime might be nice to see on one's paycheck every now and then, but too much overtime burns a person out and he or she can't perform as well because of being overworked, stressed out and a lack of personal time away from the work place. That all hinders the customer experience, too, because departments don't look as good or inviting.

By the time Kroger realizes this though, it's going to be too late. Customers will have left to shop elsewhere and plenty of them won't be back.

I think they try to hire more people, but they have trouble.  For just about anything but the front end and produce (and day clerks for things like dairy, grocery, etc.), they need people who can work 40 hours and have an open availability, not students.  I think they have a hard time drawing in people to work full time because Kroger is getting a bad reputation.  I think the starting pay at walmart is better, and they're the ones who are famous for treating their employees like ****.

I remember our store being really short-handed a bit before I left. They refused to give overtime, and in fact yelled at people who stayed over.

 You too huh?

Well ****, this seems to be a pattern.

As near as I can tell, for whatever accounting reason, this is an intentional phase we are going through.

Also, yeah, overtime can be cheaper than hiring people.  And less risk, since the retention rate at Kroger is horrible.

i agree totally with this statement!!!!!!!!!!!!

having to work 6 days a week every week gets old after a while and burns a person out

i had to see my family doctor today for another reason, but i asked my doctor to put me off for two days just for this very reason.......yea i could have gone back to work but Kroger's is F'n Killing there employes

Lucky you. My department was short just a little over 100 hours and we are told absolutely no overtime. The store manager says we are not short handed after 3 people quit and 2 are on vacation in a department that only has 8 people on the schedule. Then expects a good close and complains about holes, when we are just trying to make sure Eco lab or the health department doesn't shut us down.

Four or five years ago, this would have been almost unheard of, but now OT seems to be given out like candy.

This also forces Kroger's hand into accepting more people into full time status... Something else that wasn't always so common. You almost had to wait for someone to either die or retire before someone else could become a full timer.

This is the second or third stretch in the last 12 months where I've been scheduled 48 hours per week. I don't mind the larger paycheck, but I sure could use that second day off right now.

I think it simply comes down to the fact that Kroger has such a low starting wage, and they just can't attract a decent workforce. In the last three years, I've taken on various second jobs to supplement my income, and each place I've been hired by has started me out waaaaaay higher than Kroger does. In fact, the second job I'm currently working started me out 2 dollars more an hour than Kroger. Granted, that was based on my previous experience, but that should tell ya something.

That sounds like my department. We have 7 people on our schedule and they are constantly scheduling baggers/other depts because we are down 140 hours and Memorial Day is coming up to make things worse. I'm honestly thinking about quitting because none of my requested days off are getting accepted and i'm getting worked 6-7 days every week between 48-56 hours. The checks are nice but i'm getting tired of this bull****.

All of this.  The other job that I left Kroger for, however, didn't pay me any extra, they just gave me more hours.  You say we're shortstaffed, but why are you giving me 12 hour weeks? So yeah, I had to get a second job to stay afloat then THAT'S when they wanted to pound me with the hours.  Sorry, but that's not how you treat your employees.

If you still worked for Kroger, i bet you'd get more hours. Anymore, i see all the decent newer hires working 40 hours a week.

Maybe, or maybe not.  They couldn't keep new hires in the deli.  I went back there the other day and maybe the newbies were off, but there were 4 of them, all of who I worked with a year ago.  But seriously, there were 5 people hired in after me, and only one of them remain.  If I was on front end, I probably would've stuck around longer.

I have had the same problem at Salad Bar/Produce. I am a college student on summer break who doesn't want 40hrs a week before school. I did that last summer at Wal Mart and it burned me out before school.

I specifically said: I can work up to 30 hours a week, maybe even 35, but 40 is too much. Well, not only did he give me 40 hours, but he spread it out along 6/7 days of the week. So, knstead of giving me longer shifts and knocking it out in 3, 4, or 5 days, he gives me a bunch of shorter shifts to inconvenience me and wear me out?

I mean, I shouldn't be so harsh. 2 employy quit spontaneously, one has been in surgery and has been out for over a month, and another has an auto immune system problem that's been killing him and he REFUSES to see a dpctor for because he doesn't believe in doctors. (To put this in perspectkve, he also thinks the world is flat).

Anyway, I'm not the only person that has complained about this issue...

Overtime is rampant at my store due to how short handed we are in every department. Despite all the overtime, we still have anywhere been 800 to 1000+ holes spread out throughout the store on a daily basis. The overtime is simply burning everyone out to where it's getting harder and harder to make good use of the overtime. To make matters worse, Kroger insists on opening more and more new stores in the surrounding areas and that's only making it harder and harder to find help, and that's not even factoring the various competing chains that are in the area/continuing to open new stores in the area and offer starting pay that is several dollars above what Kroger offers.

I dread going in everyday because I never know just how bad it's going to be on any given day.
