Schedule done through seniority based select-a-shift availability became irrelevant
Permalink

I have been working as pharmacy tech for about 8 months but have been the most recent hire and therefore have the lowest seniority. Since I have been there the schedule has been done through select a shift, so my manager prints out all the available shifts and passes it around starting with the person with most seniority. Because I have the lowest seniority, I do not get any say in the shifts I receive every week. The only way I have unavailability is if my manager specifically writes my name on a certain shift or day off otherwise I get the shifts that are left over. In other words, my availability is 100% based off of what everyone else choses, whether or not it is in their availability. This recently became an issue for me because my mom passed away and the only day of the week that I can see my family due to their schedules is sundays. I have asked my manager to have sundays off but he tells me that i get whats left so if I get left a sunday shift it is MY responsibility  to cover it. I am a part of a non-union store and don't know what else to do. I want to just have my availability listed as not available on sundays, every other day I have completely open availability.

What do i do?

It is retail, you work sundays. Go somewhere else.

When ever I see a 10,000 word run-on I pass at a glance. No way I'm wasting one precious second untangling a non paragraph separated bird's nest of what ALWAYS turns out to be a sand filled vagina fest. These people go their entire lives finding things to bitch about.

You have a couple of options.

1) Do the shift and sacrifice family life.
2) Try to get the shift covered, but honestly, they probably won't give up their Sundays.
3) Look for another job that isn't rigid about days off like that.

Not all retail jobs are like this. Yes, you will need to work at least 1-2 weekends, but you may get lucky and find a position with a manager who is willing to work with you. But your safest bet is to find something outside of that field if you want something not as rigid.
