Today, I really messed up. A lady came paid with food stamps. Now, she said , "I have 76 dollars on the card." And I was like okay. So, the payment goes through. And everything shifts. She never told me to use only 76 dollars on the card. Just that she only had 76. So then she has to go to customer service. Everything has to be rescanned. And at that moment my shift was over. By the time I left , she was still there. Could I be fired for this?

In my opinion, no, not unless you are a mind reader.

There was a misunderstanding.  It could be corrected but took her some extra time.  It happens.

Sounds like she is awful at communicating. It asks if the amount is ok when the customer does any EFT transaction (debit/credit/ebt). Not surprising that she just clicked "yes" without thinking. Some people should take a good look at their life situation and realize they are there because they constantly blame others for their incompetence.

i've never cashiered, can you explain what happened here?  She had 76$ on the card and used it; so what?

I have never cashiered either.  I think what happened was the lady had $176 on the ebt card but only wanted to use $76.  Either to pay cash for the difference or take back whatever necessary to bring the grocery total back down to $76.  Maybe she was sharing the cost with a roommate that was paying cash.

It is illegal to use the ebt funds for gambling, alcohol or beer.  But, there are business' that have a way to do it anyway.  Either the lady wanted to save the $100 balance for illegal use or was trying to budget the funds for the rest of the month.

I think what happened was that she was budgeting it, only wanting to use so much per week off the card, and to pay the rest in cash.

A simple misunderstanding that i think can be fixed.
