Availability screw ups
Permalink

I don't know what right they THINK they have to screw up my set availability but they did it. They keep switching things around. I have my availability set for a reason, that's beneficial to me. I keep switching it back over and over, they keep re-doing it over and over. I try talking to them and they say they want to make it fair for all. That it's not fair I have the "more desirable" times all the time. I do NOT feel like working later shifts. It's a hassle to find a ride (to me it's a hassle) and I'm NOT going out if my way to find one. Period. Should I say that I am helping care for a family member because they have "health issues" and that IF anything improves I'll let them know? They do NOT need to know what kind of health issues.

honestly, what gives them the right to change my availability around on me?!?

Nothing. Do they accept your availability requests or just leave it pending? Not that it matters much, since department managers can just override your availability, but if they accept your availability requests, and they still schedule your outside of your availability, you can contact management about it.

What department are you in?

Also, mornings aren't really "desirable times" at most stores and departments. Most full timers and old timers prefer to work the early shifts and leave closings for part timers, kids, and people with limited availability like yourself.

I really want to say this too. I don't know much of anything about you besides what you've posted, but if you're like a lot of people that have very limited availability, are picky about their schedule, and don't really want to do any "real" work, I think you should quit. You're dead weight. I know Kroger is desperate for manpower and will hire literally anybody, and says they are open to "your schedule", it is a lie and completely the opposite of what stores need. If you can't put in hours where it counts, such as later evenings, closing, etc. you should look for a new job that is closer to you where you wouldn't need to find a ride. You're dead weight and holding everybody else back, I believe. But I may be wrong.

If a ride is an issue, then if there's a store closer to you where you don't need a ride, ask for a transfer. If not, then your safest bet is to find something else closer to your needs.

If you really weren't available during those times, then when they scheduled you, you should have called in and said you weren't able to come to work.  But since you did show up for work, they know you're really available during those times you've said you're not.  Bottom line is next time they schedule you outside your availability call in and tell them you can't make it in.  Of course you might find your hours drastically reduced.

If Kroger isn't going to respect a person's availability, then Kroger should just do away with availability forms, period.

Remember, Kroger is the one that boasts about flexible schedules in its hiring campaigns.

Also, if the OP's original availability was APPROVED by the department head, then its ON the department head for approving it, not the OP for submitting it.

Kroger is in the wrong here (as usual) and not the OP.

Correct, but OP is also to be blamed for being dead weight. Anybody who works at Kroger should know that the whole flexible schedule thing in its hiring events is a lie and it's just a way to trick students and people with limited availability into getting hired. In reality, Kroger does not need "limited availability" people and those people themselves know it. Of course OP is not to be blamed for his or her limited schedule, but he or she should not be causing this much of a ruckus, he or she should just quit and find a new job closer to home that probably pays more lol

Are you really unavailable though or are you just like oh i want to go hang out with my friends and don't want to work evenings? because thats kind of what you made it sound like. seems to me you want to work all mornings but you'd be the type to complain when you don't get scheduled any hours because of your crappy "availability".

i don't understand people who set availability when they aren't even in school, at another job, etc.

i know Kroger dicks with people, no doubt about that one, but OP needs to own part of this in my opinion.

What's your contract say? in ATL division you can only request a permanent change ONCE every 6 months.  The exception being students who can open/reduce availabilities when in/out of school. I'm going to hold people to that.  Don't get hired as one thing and try to change it right away.  Sorry, you've just made yourself a problem. We need you but we don't need you that badly.

If you requested a temporary change at greatpeople then yeah it's going to be OK'd for that time but then it resets so make sure you made it open ended. When short staffed I've left some requests pending indefinitely but tried to work around them when building the schedule. Usually it's when somebody suddenly wants Sundays off.

I had some people not realize they had requested just for a week or for the wrong weeks. Sorry! That's not my problem.

I find the ones changing availabilities a lot just can't be bothered and just stop coming to work not long after.  If you just don't want to work when it's busy maybe the job isn't for you.

And if OP claims "helping care for relative with medical needs" what is he/she going to do if kroger asks for proof when the relative is indeed fine? Kroger may ask for a doctor's note explaining why help is needed. OP may be in for a struggleif he/she can't provide back up proof for "medical needs" relative

If you're unavailable, you're unavailable. In my opinion it doesn't matter what the reason is, it's none of the store's business. If you're willing not to be paid for those hours and willing to accept you might not be scheduled that day because of your limited availability, then that's your choice. Kroger doesn't get to determine what's a good reason or not. You're not a slave (even if it may feel like it.)
