Any tips/advice for becoming a cashier?

I don't really know since I'm still a courtesy clerk but I would think you would be paid more than a CC. All I know about cashiers are they aren't allowed to take tips.

as cross trained you wont be immediately get paid more but you will have more raises than a normal CC.

You won't actually get a raise as long as your title is CC, but you'll get your wage adjusted. CC's can't get raises, at least not at my store.

When handing money back, make sure coins first(unless you have the coin machine thing) and then count the money back to the customer. This blows a lot of customers' minds when I do it, like they expect that I can't count. But it keeps you out of hot water if you catch an extra 20 in your hand before you pass it on to the customer. Also it keeps them from being able to accuse you of short changing them as easily. Build a reputation for double counting and the managers should take notice and have your back if anything does happen.

I always thought if you are a CC, they can't make you run register. If that was the case, they'd just have everyone be a CC.

This is correct.

Most contracts have an outlined list of possible duties of CCs.  They are not to exceed this list.
This is the tradeoff for the union allowing CCs to generally be on a much worse payscale.

If you are a CC, you should not run register, you should not stock shelves, you should not be scanning holes.  There are a million things in the store you should not be doing, and a fairly short list of things you should be doing, like bagging and carts.

That said.  If they make you a cashier, good for them and good for you.  If they keep you as a bagger and have you run register, have a chat with your union steward because you are getting screwed in the long run.
