Short shifts and conscience
Permalink

Was scheduled an early 5 hour shift today, took lunch within that timespan, went home on time. Truck was late yesterday, and due to poor scheduling only had 2 people to break down the load. New dept. manager came in just as I was leaving, and gets pissy because I didn't stay later and break out the rest of our stuff. Only the 2 of us were scheduled, leaving him to work till the middle of the afternoon with no closer scheduled. We are already several hours over on ELMS for the week, but I feel bad for not staying. Should I have?

I should point out that the 2 people assigned to break down the load are in a separate department from us.

You get a lunch for only a 5-hour shift?  As far as staying goes, it's not your fault a proper schedule wasn't made out.  Your shift was over.  It was time to go home.  That's typical behavior though for department managers when they come in later and you've already put in your time.  I might stay over if there's a legitimate reason such as someone calling in but I certainly wouldn't do it just because someone doesn't know how to make out a schedule.

I am a department manager.  It is not your problem.  They should have made the schedule better.  The truck getting there late is out of your control.

If you wanted to volunteer to stay the 8 hour shift, then that is your choice.

As long as you did something productive during your 5 hour shift, the manager has no reason to get pissy at you.

Curious on whether it was poor scheduling on the department head's end or due to Kroger's practice with ELMS and whatnot.

Yes it's poor scheduling to have only 2 people there, but they also get pissy if you dare to go over the hours alloted for the week.

Either way, it's not your fault for their stupid business practices.
