Customers who insist on bagging their own stuff when no bagger is present
Permalink

So I'm checking them out, there's no bagger, and so they insist on bagging their own, even after I say that it's alright, that I can bag for them. So they start bagging their stuff, and then a bagger arrives, and they just give up and let the bagger bag their stuff.

This is something I found interesting in my few weeks of being a cashier for Kroger. Mind you, I used to be a cashier in a totally different grocery store, and you had to bag their stuff as you checked them out. Having a bagger was a luxury. So I was used to doing both fast.

Me as a bagger / UC: personally if they want to keep doing it when I get over to the lane, sure by all means, let's do this together. Other times, the customer wants to do it, so I simply say ok and move on to the next register. Other times if I ask if I can take over for them, they'll gladly step aside as we on FE are the "pros" in the customers mindset. We know our job, or we wouldn't be here. It's just one of those interesting things you see.

I am glad this is not a complaint thread. I have seen customers so graciously bag their own carts which could feed 4 teenage boys. It is really nice when they do it to help you out and not hold the next customer up.

As a customer, if i'm in a line with no bagger, i'll start bagging it. i have no problem doing it myself. there's no point in standing around waiting for the cashier to do it all.

The best is when teenagers or children will bag for their parents or whoever they're with. I always tell them thank you for helping me out when they do it, it's so nice.

as for adults, I've noticed its mostly men or very young (20-30) year old females that will do it. I'll apologize and tell them what happened to the bagger, and tell them i'll bag it after I ring it.

The worst is once I heard a mother yell at her teenage son for bagging when I had no bagger and it was late, I was last cashier. She yells "DON'T BAG OUR ****, YOU AIN'T NO KROGER EMPLOYEE AND NEVER WILL BE, THAT'S THEIR *JOB*" Job was said in a tone where you'd generally put "quotations" around if you were speaking the sentence yourself. It was just so degrading and awful the way she said it.

But the ABSOLUTE worst is being on an express lane that has the 6 spinning carousel, you took their order even though it's well over 15 items, and they just stand there like a dumbass as I pile their groceries on top of the carousel because I have no more rooms to bag ANYTHING ELSE, and the least you could do is pick up your bags and put them in your cart so I can keep bagging.... *******s. Or they're like "oh, so I have to bag MY OWN groceries now?" As if it's preposterous that they bag what they're paying for and taking home.. i always tell them "I'll bag it after the transaction, it'll be faster" and get huffs and puffs from them. Ugh.

I'm curious, why wait till after you're done ringing it to bag? I know it's to be fast, but, why not bag as you're ringing it? The way I see it, either way, it's going to take the same amount of time. Or am I missing something? If there's no bagger, do they not have bags right beside the register?

It's not faster, it just makes you look faster.  On your CCG's, anyways.

Skipping bagging increases your IPM.  There's no penalty for bagging while the customer is baffled by the card reader or after the transaction.

When I'm on a regular lane, I HATE IT when a customer bags their own items.  It's dead time during the transaction.  Either it trashes my tender time or my IPM.  I feel like they're punishing us for not giving the front end enough hours.

I have the same problem as a cashier at the location I work at, especially on the weekends.

So what is the best solution to this problem when there are not enough courtesy clerks?

I love when they bag for me. I don't scan any faster or slower; I just let the items pile up at the end of my conveyor as I always do, hit total and then help them finish up bagging. They pay, leave, and everyone is happy. Sure it screws over your tender score a little but not near as much as having to bag them all yourself.

At our store, a few months ago, they took away the bags that you have inside of the register. They'd slide the little thing over it so we wouldn't have bags near us, and told us not to move them back because the CSM wants us to only bag AFTER you are through scanning everything, and hit EFT.

If they pay cash, its different because its faster. I always cash it out immedietly and then bag their items, because it keeps my ring tender down, and its the fastest way.

When they use EFT, ill hit EFT and then go to the end of the belt and start bagging. When I hear the beeps for them to take their chip card out, ill head back to the register, clear any cashback, close the drawer if it opens, and THEN go bag.

We've been pretty pressed in not being able to bag during the order. The CSM or ACSM will see us doing it and move the bags (if we can manage to hide them to the left of us without them noticing, they'll pick it up and move it back to the end of the belt). Plus, if you wait until the end and have enough baggers, eventually during the transaction a bagger will hop over and start bagging.

I apologize if the bagger had to go out to get carts or escort another customer out, if the person bagging for me is on USCAN or Customer Service, i'll tell the customers so they'll be aware it isn't disrespect.

I would think you would appreciate that they are bagging it and not holding you up. Some customers would prefer to do it themselves then have a cashier do it. Cashiers are trained to ring their stuff up. Baggers are trained to bag the groceries. I'm picky when it comes to bagging my groceries. I don't want m bread on the bottom of the bag unless it's going to be in the bag by itself. I don't want can goods bagged with boxes, I don't want cold foods bagged with boxes or items wrapped in paper or plastic. Baggers are trained for customers like me. So be happy if a customer would just rather do it themselves. Then they can't get mad because you put something in the wrong bag.

Actually, it is holding me up.  The customer is standing there bagging their own groceries instead of paying for the order.  I have about 2 seconds to scan each item, 10 seconds to tender a card transaction, and 30 seconds for cash.  All of the time that the customer is bagging their order is time that I am being penalized for.  All I get is grief about my CCG's, but the worst part is that I can't do anything about it since so much of it falls on the customer.

If I bag the customer's order poorly, it's because they were being a jerk.  And actually, sometimes that's because they insisted on bagging their own groceries.  How about that?

How about being rude to a customer is worse than you taking a few extra seconds with a customer or your CCGs falling behind. They may let you know that you need to speed things up, but they will definitely warn you then write you up for treating customers disrespectfully. Ask the customer when it's time to pay cash or credit. Get their attention in a respectful way!
