So this doesn't make sense to me
Permalink

Okay, ive been working here at my store for nearly 2 years now. I always have to beg for hours; though I was hired for at LEAST 32 a week. When they give me short days, they ask or near beg me (if we are short staffed) to stay a full 8. I do in most cases, cause heck; im a 23 year old and I can use the cash to LIVE, right? I always tell them if they scedule me for 7-3 like I told them when i was hired, it would be all set and they wouldn't have to worry, and neither would i. They know that i am reliable, responsible and set the standard high when it comes to my work; which by the way i am a courtesy/utility clerk.

BUT; heres my issue.  They just hired this new guy; cut my hours and fed them to him. hes over here getting 35 and im down to 23.  we in the same potion; i trained this guy, but all he has done sense is do go backs and buggies. nothing, and i mean nothing else.

don't i have seniority? I can fight with the union on this? I mean ive called them already twice but seems they havent wanted to reply to me yet...

im in a bit of a tight spot, help me out?

I'd talk to management again and see what goes. Then try and talk to union. I haven't been a UC/CC (utility or couresy clerk) for quite a while. Last time I was in those positions I was in another state (Safeway worker). Can you bump him? Take the hours away from him?

That's why I NEVER train someone working the same position as me with everything. I just train them with the bare basics to get the job done. Leave the "tips and tricks" out.

Ask your shop steward.

Yes, grieve it.  But, keep in mind, you have to have open availability.

Also, his hours might be training hours for now.  And cut later.

I've been working for Kroger as long as you have and have the same problem. I'm a cashier, was a courtesy clerk for my first 3 months of employment, and even though for the majority of my time here I got 4@ hours every week from shift swaps, covering from call-ins and volunteering to work (by asking permission first of course) whenever I request to go full-time management always says "Ask my FEM" and my FEM always says "No".

So because I didn't get 40 hours on paper, I got thrown under the bus last summer when they hired a bunch of these new kids, half of them not even making it past the probationary period. When that happened, volunteering did no good because they were all covered. I couldn't have open availibility when it was happening, because at that point I had another job. I left that job in January, and once February came along and I was back to working 40, by asking week to week.

So, my advice to you, is what's worked for me : make your availibility as wide as possible, if you can have it to "open" every single day (they won't deny you a dayoff) and maintained a positive relationship with management and your FES. If they see you going above and beyond in your duties, they will value you and let you have "first pick" in any extra hours even if they can't give it to you on paper.

If you have limited availability then they can give someone more hours than you based on their open availability. Union can't fight for you to have more hours if you are limited.  You can bump hours but you can't bump outside your availability. And if your unavailable during the evenings your hours can be knocked down by senior members who are entitled to more day shifts.
