Question on requesting time off
Permalink

Hey had a quick question on putting in requests for days off. My fam is wanting to do a mini trip up to King's Island before the summer is out in August the weekend of the 18th-21st. As I've never requested time off.  I don't know if I can request off 4 days back to back under NoPay or not while I'm still part-time.

I'll be getting my full-time on the 23rd of this month. But I won't have been on for a year til the just about the end of August(27th from what I've seen on hrexpress). Not to mention I would have just transferred over into the Deli dept a week or two before.

So some clue how this works would be great. At most I've found in my condensed version of my contract it talks about personal leaves, but you have to have been on for a year. And allowed only up to 90 days and from how it reads, can only be used for urgent and compelling reasons. But I don't think I saw anything about taking days off even without pay for part-timers or even full-timers.

I'm in the Columbus Division under contract Local 1059. So if anybody has any info to help me out, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Go to Greatpeople.me click on your 'myschedule' then to your upper right you'll see schedule 'portal'. Click on it then go to availability and request the days you need off. You have to do this at least 2 weeks in advance. Anything under 14 days you can't request off on line.

Thanks, I was going to do that anyway. I just wanted to know should I put it under NoPay or Personal and if they would deny me cause I've not been on for a year just yet.

You could try to put it in as personal, but I don't think you can use personal until you've been there a year.

Requests are just requests.  I recommend you enter it into Eschedule and make your Schedule writer aware of it.

I had one girl request Thurs, Friday, Saturday and Sunday off next week.  I denied the first three days.  I gave her Friday off and told her to negotiate with others to cover her shifts.  I am very short on people combined with constant call ins.  She said she could come in Sunday even tho that schedule hasn't been made yet.

She was bewildered when I told her that.  I didn't like denying them but am getting tired of these people demanding too much.  She thought it automatically means she gets the days off.  Then, she tried to tell me she has more seniority than others.  I told her not to start that with me.  She doesn't understand that people with open availability have more seniority schedule wise than her working only 4 days a week.

Also, you can lose full time status if you don't keep a certain average of hours.  I am not sure how strict Cincy is or what the magic number is.

Here, if a full time person falls below average 38 hours a week during 12 weeks, they lose full time status.  I don't know when the measurement time starts and stops.  That would be calling in 3 days during 12 weeks.  Of course, I have 2 people that have not worked 40 hours in 3 months and are still full time status on my schedule.  They don't want full time so it is no big deal to them.

You could tell them 'personal family business.' That's good enough for them, they don't need to know anything rlse.

Thanks, and yea I get it that requests are just requests(trying to explain that to fam is a trip all on it's own. Most especially my dad as he is like if they could schedule you 4 days off before, why can't they do it not?). I also know with me going into another part of the dept. that has more call offs than the law would allow. So yea, I doubt I will be able to get 4 days off like that again to be honest with ya.

And yea, I saw something about that in regards to losing full-time if dropped below so many hours. So I'll for sure have to talk to my schedule writer about all this. I mean hell I just got full-time. I'd hate to freaking lose it that quickly just cause my fam feels I've been working so much and haven't had any quality time off since I've been hired.

I also have my schedule set to open since I quit my second job when we were at our old store. But yea, I'll talk things over with my scheduler and even my family. As I just read what you said to my dad. And he was like "well damn, guess the trip is out." But hey it is what it is. I mean my week vacay is in October, so can figure something out to do then.

But can I ask though, for future reference. Would it just be better to wait til I've been on long enough to get 2 weeks or more off before planning future trips? Or is there better times of the year for associates to request time off and it won't effect the dept. too badly if someone is off for a few days(I'll ask my scheduler this too)? I know not during major holidays of course or if too many other folks are already out on their vacations.

Just ask for them as days off without pay.  They're two separate work weeks.  Ask off for Friday and Saturday of one week and then Sunday and Monday the following week

I recommend putting in "Out of Town" and/or "Family Trip" in the "Comment" box. It can't hurt, and it lets your Department Head know that the reason your requesting time off is specifically because you're going to be out of town. Depending on your union contract, the more seniority you have (as in, how long you've worked for Kroger) is supposed to play a role in time off requests, and in some instances, being full time helps too because full time employees are supposed to be given requested time off first before a part time employee's request is even considered.

Yeah this is over 2 weeks on the schedule so you might be ok depending on how well staffed your department is and how nice your department head is.

I would at least mention it to your DH first and see what he says.

Thanks everybody for the info. Definitely have a better understanding of how to do this and all of whom I need to talk to. Although I'll admit I have a sneaking suspicion my DH might say nada, simply because if there comes a time when he has to be on closing again and can't call me or the other lady I work in, to cover that shift, I think he might burst a blood vessel or something. Although, I don't see how they could complain too much either really as a friend of mine was just telling me last night that she got back from Cedar Point herself. Not sure if she just took off the weekend or not. But they must have okayed it. Even with her having many call offs previously. But we shall see.

That's what worries me actually. As we've lost a few peeps over the last several months in bakery(might be losing another one shortly too, as she is too bossy for some of the old timers taste, and I think I overheard one of them talking about writing something up and taking it to management about he). And although we've hired on 1 new person for bakery and like 4 others for Deli. My DH is still like you will most likely have to act as a go between the departments. As Deli often has tons of folks on hand. But there are just as many if not more call offs down there as well.

So to be quite frank with ya, I doubt I would be able to get even 2 days off back to back unless they already have that in mind to schedule me that way. Kind of how I think I lucked into having that initial 4 days off like that. From weekend to Monday to Tuesday off. And even then they tried to call me twice to come in and cover for closing for peeps.
