fuel center blunder
Permalink

i'm a uscan attendant, cashier at the main store the fuel people have almost all been fired most all because there background checks failed and the lead person quit. now management is trying to make me work fuel center 30 hrs on 2 week schedule even though i never been trained over there i given a few breaks but that was all i was told to stand there and look pretty and yell for the fuel person if a customer came up. i called the union a week ago asking if they can permanently force me to work there and they said no cause its a lower position than mine. they said they can sporadically put me there but not forever. i feel like i going to freak out or just refuse to do it. fuel people never get breaks or lunches anymore because no one at our store been trained to do it. 8 hrs a day in solitary confinement is what it will be and i feel like i'm being punished for managements stupid hiring blunder.  any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. also our fuel center is about a block away from the store. so no chance of anyone being able to come help me if there is trouble.

Stand your ground and tell management that you are not comfortable performing a job that you have not been adequately trained for. See, if you do go out there and something does go wrong, management likely wouldn't hesitate to write you up and while you could challenge the write up with the help of the union, why place yourself in such a situation to begin with? I don't see how management could force you to do this or punish you for not agreeing to do this because management knows if you get the union involved, they have no ground to stand on. Just be sure to keep your union rep in the loop as to what's going on and don't let management put you in a position that you're not comfortable being in.

Get the union rep on the horn.  You haven't had training.  The union is usually worse than useless, but there's a very slight chance that they will be able to help.

Or, maybe you could go along with it.  Off-site fuel center is supposed to have two employees at a time.  If there's someone else out there who isn't retarded, it's a vacation at the gas station.  If I could understand anyone through the squawk box, I'd be completely thrilled to be out there.

A cashier is not a fuel clerk just as a fuel clerk is not a cashier. Try putting a fuel clerk on a register and see how that ends up going. Your manager sounds like a typical out of touch, inconsiderate, and overpaid empty suit that has no business being in a managerial position.

Managers are supposed to be able to handle any task in the store... so tell her to get out there and run the fuel center. After all, she's supposed to know how to do it, being a manager and all.

See that's another great decision this company has made that lacks common sense. Off Site Fuel Centers are great when Stores do not have room in their parking lots, but why are they not operated differently? There should always be 2 associates staffing the place at all times! If I was you, simple state your not feel comfortable working by yourself and are classifies as a Front End Associate, unless all Front End associates are trained for Fuel you will file a grievance for unfair business practices.

Wow, I have zero experience with Fuel Dept as in my state we aren't fully converted to Krog yet, but are getting there. This sounds suspect and honestly fishy. I would do like EUID Unknown says, as honestly if it's truly a box on the ground that you're in for 8 hours alone while policy says two employees on duty, and off site to boot. All of it sounds sketchy, and I would demand proper training and adequate help, otherwise file a grievance for unfair business practices. I honestly would tell the manager you are not comfortable and are in fear of your safety without proper training and adequate help, with a union rep in the room when you do so. Get the union involved, do not let them push you like that.

UC151, I think in another post you said your Roundy's. Well Kroger wasn't horrible, its getting worse and worse with all the programs and technology telling us what tasks/hours/orders we do. You will soon, have 1-2 people working in each department daily and asked why your conditions are not up to standards.

Every Fuel Center basically gets 151 hours, which hasn't changed in 15 years. So you add cleaning, stocking, new coolers, more product and more customers....yet no more staffing! Kroger is basically marketing our Fuel Centers as its own national chain.

Yep. Wow so in a way, it's only going to seem like it's getting better, but really is driving for the bottom of the tank like a bottle rocket. Great.....
