What steps did you have to go through to become one? How long did it take? Were you backups before you were Leads? What training do you need? Just curious!!!!

Wassup! Just became a Dairy Lead in late August. Been with the company a total of 5yrs, worked in dairy for 4 of those, and was a back up for about 2-3yrs.

Everyone's story will be different but as for me: The district grocery coordinator asked me this past summer if i was interested in moving up and i said yes. Then i just kinda waited for them to give me the word, and they found me a store in August. They gave me one day notice lol. "You're starting tomorrow".

As far as "training" (other than the hands on training i got throughout the years and stuff my old dairy manager taught me), I had to take a bunch of online modules before i could be certified as a Lead. Mainly basic Q&A type stuff about different subjects. Fun lol. But you do it on company time so you get paid to sit through the tedium.

Next, not sure about other departments, but a district person/coordinator has to come to your store and officially "certify" you. They pretty much just see if you're capable of the position and if you're on good terms woth em, then it shouldn't be a problem.

Now about pay. I initially got one for reaching full-time (i was still technically part-time before promotion) but i barely got my "Lead" raise the beginning of this month. So that one took a lil while. But i'll be getting a retro pay check to compensate the work i've done since getting the position.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope i helped!

I had a coordinator call me to ask if I wanted to be a backup at another store. I agreed. I was there a year and scheduled for dept head training before looking for my own dept & interviewing.  Each interview helped me see better what they were looking for.  Ive seen so many fail, be frustrated, etc.  Im not surprised because its a stressful thing.  You can get a middle performing store and be under the gun to perform, you can be at an easy store and be under pressure to keep up their high performance or you can be in a thankless store that no body wants to work at and try to fix sh*t.  Good luck with that. disbelief

I've always had a good reputation and worked overnight grocery for several years, applied for grocery manager training, went through it. No stores came open that I wanted to apply for so I ended up moving to Frozen just to get full time, then the current lead quit so I took it. I've had a bunch of stores ask for me but none of them could match the total compensation I get locally with all of the overtime so I stayed put. I help train all grocery and grocery sub departments and any new leads/backups. Currently pursuing a degree in business so when I'm done with that I'll be out of Kroger most likely.

I like the way you're situation turned out. Being able to get overtime compensation is nice. There are very few departments in Kroger that I'd actually even consider managing.
