FMLA or vacation time?

Alrighty, so both mom and I work for Dillons stores (I started where she is now working then I recently got a full time promotion at a larger store) and she discovered some cancer that needed removed ASAP after they found it because its genetic and highly aggressive. Before I even could think to ask for time off (especially under 1 week notice of the surgery date) our HR (does hr for both locations) actually came to ME and asked me if I wanted time off for the day. I had some vacation time left and with a little discussing with my department manager he dropped a shift to take mine for me.

A little ways down the road after the first surgery and theyre finding some cancerous tissue theyve missed so they know she will have to be back in the hospital for another surgery providing a tentative date to the end of December, but  it isnt a guaranteed date yet.

I still  have a little over a days vacation time to use and with no actual plans for it so ideally I would like to do that because I live paycheck to paycheck. However, after telling my department manager about potentially needing that day or a day around that off he got pretty short worded with me about the subject and the only response Ive gotten was expressing urgency I get my request in the computer and that the other full time person was already planning on taking his time off in December.

I get it, its hard to plan for that stuff, he already helped me personally the first time and thats blackout week and as much notice I can offer beforehand the better. Im just worried that itll turn out being not much more than a weeks notice again. I keep bugging my mom to let me know the date as soon as she finds out but she cant really do a lot about it either. it doesnt help my feelings that theyre going to try to stick me with little sympathy being that both department managers are taking 3 days off during thanksgiving week and Im department head on the holiday by myself and that Saturday (especially after only being here 3 months and actively ordering the last month) AND the other full timer taking time off.

Im not quite sure how FMLA works or what the application process for that would be but anyone with a bit of insight on this situation maybe they have experienced similarly would be appreciated. Im assuming I wont get paid for it but thats fine, id be fine with it being my day off for the week and working the holiday week all other 6 days... I just would really like to be there for my mom being that it is progressing and they have decided afterwards she will need chemo and hormone therapy for recovery cry Whatever I need to get approved for FMLA shouldnt be that hard because HR knows my mom will be off too. I just want to make sure to the best of my ability Ill get that day off (all days estimated are at least a couple after the holiday anyways!). Is FMLA like a guaranteed thing thatll take priority? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you for reading about my situation.
