So I requested online to be off on the day before and the day of a Holiday and I made sure to it in advance so that I did not affect the business.
However today my front end manager said he cannot accept it because its a holiday and apparently our management is making their employees work.
He basically said I can go ask the higher up management and see if I can be off for that holiday.
I believe that it is absolutely wrong that this is the way things are! I looked through all the policies and the Associate Handbook and there is NOTHING that says I cannot do that.
If this is some unwritten policy then this is absolutely wrong and this needs to be exposed.
Somebody in my department tried to request the week of Thanksgiving off. I declined his request immediately. You are not going to be allowed to take off around holiday time, trust me. Way too busy. And management can deny your requests as long as they want until you choose a day or week that is not close to a big holiday. Store's needs come first. Union will also tell you this, as I doubt you have the seniority.
I requested Thanksgiving & Black Friday off and they both got approved. I guess it really depends on how nice management is and if they have enough help.

Yep I have seen people get holiday s off, so it really just depends on who is doing your schedule.

Under our contract (Louisville Division), Thanksgiving Day hours are suppose to be scheduled by inverse seniority. That means the people who have the least amount of time get scheduled first. Also, if you do work on Thanksgiving Day, you only have to work four hours. Of course all of that can change to satisfy the "Needs of the business".

What is this 4 hour thing, I didn't realize employees don't work more than four hours on a holiday

I think it depends on the relationship you have with your manager. I requested this Thursday/Friday/Saturday off about a month ago-and got it. I made it very clear I was not working Thanksgiving and wanted to spend it with my family as I have worked the last 3 years on that date. They gladly were able to accommodate me-probably because I have accommodated them on numerous occaisions.
